The family of my best friend growing up here in Suburban North Jersey had a 2nd home a little south of the Toms River area. My friend would refer to them as "Pinies".
Yes, that was the Jersey term for them. A lot of them were good people, I’m sure, but there were those that were strange to say the least. Many were squatters and lived off the land and sold bootleg booze, pot, and whatever they could. Chickens, eggs, hogs, etc. also. Some worked in the blueberry fields and cranberry bogs as seasonal workers. I’m sure there were people down there who had no record of ever being born.
