President Donald Trump reportedly rebuffed Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro's push for sweeping amnesty during a phone call last week, telling the embattled leader and his senior aides to abandon their demands and leave the country as U.S. pressure intensifies.
Trump and Maduro discussed a broad amnesty proposal during a phone call last week, people familiar with the exchange told The Wall Street Journal.
Maduro reportedly asked for general amnesty for himself, his senior aides, and their families.
Many of those individuals face U.S. sanctions or criminal indictments tied to corruption, drug trafficking, and human rights abuses.
People familiar with the call said Trump rejected the request and warned Maduro that the United States would escalate military actions if he refused to leave Venezuela.
Trump also told key regime officials, including Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello, Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino, Vice President Delcy Rodríguez, and National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez, to flee the country, according to the same sources.
Two days after the call, Trump publicly signaled a more rigid posture.
During Thanksgiving remarks at Mar-a-Lago, he said potential land strikes against Venezuela could begin soon.
"The land is easier. That's going to start very soon. We warned them, stop sending poison into our country," he said.
On Saturday, Trump posted a message declaring that the airspace surrounding Venezuela should be treated as closed.
"To all Airlines, Pilots, Drug Dealers, and Human Traffickers, please consider THE AIRSPACE ABOVE AND SURROUNDING VENEZUELA TO BE CLOSED IN ITS ENTIRETY," he wrote.
The Federal Aviation Administration pointed to a Notice to Airmen issued last week advising pilots to use caution because of "the worsening security situation and heightened military activity."

I had a beautiful, young niece who died from fentanyl. If I were Trump the only deal I might consider is one that involved providing evidence of involvement by high level US leadership.
Maduro must go.
“Maduro reportedly asked for general amnesty for himself, his senior aides, and their families.
Many of those individuals face U.S. sanctions or criminal indictments tied to corruption, drug trafficking, and human rights abuses.”
The extremist polices of not allowing amnesty for him, Assad, Kaddafy, Saddam or others ensures they stay and fight all they can. Thousands die, some of our guys die... and lots of US dollars get spent in the military action.
Better to grant amnesty and let them flee. Then it’s over. But that doesn’t give Trump the big distraction show he wants/needs.
Cocaine comes from Venezuela, not Fentanyl.
Anyway, this is not about drugs or we would see several US banks seized and several offshore nations that host dope banks getting sanctioned. This is about oil. Venezuela just claimed oil from Guyana. They also signed cooperation agreements with China in the spring and Russia ab few months ago.
It’s not about dope. Fentanyl comes from China and Mexico.
He just did a deal with China.
When you refuse the possibility for amnesty, you back them into a corner. Way more innocent people needlessly die. Better to let the go in peace and then start working on the place they left behind.
But that’s not as fun as war is...(for DC)
Maduro must of reneged on the money laundering agreement.....
“People familiar with the call said...”
Is this a spy leaking? Or an intentional leak? Trump is usually so outspoken that there’s no need for oblique, devious ways to get information out. He just tells us.
So how did this happen?
It's poor journalism, most Western Media is infected.
I wondered the same thing, did they really talk by phone?
No DEAL, TYRANT!
“You see, if I can get out of the country to somewhere safe, and I can keep all my wealth, and get amnesty, I’ll walk out of this place TODAY!”
If anyone can fix the mess Biden created, It’s the “Don”.
It’s not about oil. We don’t need their crude which is of very poor quality very thick, like tar almost, only one refinery in the U.S. can deal with the junk, an our oil supplies are opening up. Very soon we will be exporting instead of importing again. It’s more about stopping the spread of communism in South America. And yes, there is fentanyl coming in from there along with other hard drugs.
