Trump administration halts immigration from Afghanistan after DC shooting

The Trump administration on Wednesday said it was placing an indefinite pause on immigration from Afghanistan in response to the shooting of two National Guard members in Washington D.C.

The suspected shooter, an Afghan national, immigrated to the U.S. in 2021, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

“Effective immediately, processing of all immigration requests relating to Afghan nationals is stopped indefinitely pending further review of security and vetting protocols,” the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) said in a post on the social media platform X.

“The protection and safety of our homeland and of the American people remains our singular focus and mission,” the agency added.

President Trump on Wednesday night ordered his administration to review the cases of individuals from Afghanistan who entered the country after the U.S. withdrawal from the Middle Eastern country in 2021.

The shooting suspect, Rahmanaullah Lakanwal, 29, entered the United States in September 2021 through the program “Operation Allies Welcome,” DHS said Wednesday night. At the time, the Biden administration ordered DHS to help vulnerable Afghans who worked with American troops during the 20-year war in Afghanistan resettle in the U.S. after the Taliban’s takeover in August 2021.

^^^EXACTLY THIS^^^ This haphazard reactionary policy making is not genius, nor is it an effective means to the end we all know should be pursued. On day 1 Trump should've insisted that all immigration be halted immediately, and everything that had been done by the previous administrations be re-examined/vetted for lack of oversight like this. Hell, we knew they did this when they did it, we knew they were lying about the vetting process (that is was impossible to vet anyone then). How is this just now coming to the fore and only looking at select groups?

This also frosted me this morning:

I’m tired of all the victim blaming. The guardsmen have saved many lives based on the huge drop in crime stats. How about radical Muslims and people incompatible with America not be here instead? I hope this Afghan immigration halt and the review over the Afghan refugees are just the start.
