I'm smug about the fact that I don't live in proximity to a volcano.

I caught some pretty impressive vids of the Mt. Semeru lahars on YooToob last night. It was one of those “if you see this with your own eyes you’re dead” moments. BTT

Google Maps doesn’t show a bridge to Messina. I’m a bit surprised, as the strait is less than two miles and a bridge would definitely facilitate evacuation. They would have to design it to hold up a load of ash though. ;-)

OK … I’m no geologist … but is that really a good idea???

Just queried the depth of that strait. It would have to be a bridge capable of spanning about a mile with its end towers set in 300’ deep waters... capable of holding a load of wet ash in an earthquake? Man, that’s a tough design problem!

I think I’d go for a sacrificial center span to be replaced.

Messina, Brad! Messina! Oh, sorry.

There's been talk for a really long time about such a bridge. The parliamentary gubmint of Italy tends to fall a lot, and there's a big divide, believe it or not, on whether such a project should be undertaken.

If memory serves, Italy has actually tried to sell bonds to finance the project several times, and each time the gov't fell before very many were sold, so the money raised just went into general funds.

The current plan is for a huge-ass suspension bridge.

IMHO some Korean or Japanese (or whomever Norway uses) company that prefabs tunnel sections, sinks them, links them all together, then pumps out the water should be availed of. While the discussion about the bridge goes on, the link could have been completed years ago.

The maximum depth reaches over 800ft. That’s a lot of pressure for a drop-in tunnel.

The strait is a busy transit point, so the road would have to be well above, or go under the whole works. Either way, the seafloor would need to be thoroughly surveyed for ancient wrecks, well, and more recent ones, before any construction.

When the Moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie, you immediately sue the writer of the song for unfair characterizations of Italians.

The Campi Flagrei (hope I got that spelling) is near Vesuvius, while Messina is at the NE point of Sicily. And the Indonesian one, way far away. It seemed like a good combo topic, but I may have been waaaay off.

We visited the Naples/Pomepeii area earlier this year. It is interesting how Mt. Vesuvius prominently looms over the entire Naples Bay region. It is a big mountain.

One day, it will go boom and will be spectacular.
