The reason why you might not have had to think about it is because the expectations of the male, to be an honourable knight, was immersed throughout society and you were continually being reminded daily of what it was expected of you and what it meant.
Society has expunged that from itself and younger males don’t have those reminders. They are told daily that it is toxic to be that honourable knight and they exist to serve the female. :)
