Fred Goldman may be closer to finally receiving payment from OJ Simpson’s estate nearly three decades after winning a wrongful death judgment against the former football great who was acquitted of killing his son.
Malcolm LaVergne, the executor of the Simpson estate, has accepted Goldman’s creditor claim for $57,997,858.12 plus ongoing judgment interest, TMZ reported on Saturday.
The news site reports that the figure was agreed to following negotiations between the estate and Goldman, whose son Ron was killed alongside Simpson’s ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, in June 1994.

Why shouldn’t he get a nickel?
He’ll get pennies on the dollar. OJ estate has a line of creditors. It’s also essentially broke. I do feel bad for all of the “kids” involved.
Background of the Civil Judgment
Civil Trial: In 1997, a civil jury found O.J. Simpson liable for the deaths of Ron Goldman and Nicole Brown Simpson, even though he had been acquitted in a criminal trial two years prior. The burden of proof is lower in civil cases (”preponderance of the evidence” vs. “beyond a reasonable doubt” in a criminal case).
Simpson was ordered to pay $33.5 million in compensatory and punitive damages to the victims’ families.
Unpaid Judgment: During Simpson’s lifetime, the vast majority of the judgment went unpaid, with some reports indicating only about $133,000 was ever collected. To avoid payment, Simpson moved to states like Florida and Nevada, where certain assets, such as his NFL pension, were protected from seizure by state law.
Current Status
Estate Claim: After Simpson’s death in April 2024, Fred Goldman filed a creditor’s claim against the estate for a sum that had ballooned to over $100 million with interest.
The executor of Simpson’s estate has recently accepted a negotiated claim from Fred Goldman for nearly $58 million, plus accumulated interest.
The estate plans to pay as much of the amount as possible by auctioning off Simpson’s possessions.
Ultimately, the $58 million represents a legally determined amount of damages for the wrongful death of Ron Goldman, as decided by a civil court jury.
Of course Fred Goldman should be paid.
A jury found Simpson not guilty of murder.
And so he was set free.
Another jury found Simpson civilly liable.
And so that judgment should be paid.
All I remember about all that was that Fred looked like he was ready to kill OJ himself.
Can ya blame him?
Not at all.
And the lawyers get first dibs, so the available dollars will diminish very quickly...
Correct!
“All I remember about all that was that Fred looked like he was ready to kill OJ himself.”
He should have. Better yet, made him wish he was dead.
Lawyers who work on contingency get a percentage.
Back in the 1990s, in Los Angeles, the standard rate was the lawyer gets 33% if there's a settlement, and 40% if the case goes to trial. (Don't ask me how I know.)
I actually meant the estate probate lawyers. But I do suspect his prior defense lawyers are still owed something, too.
Accepting the claim and satisfying the claim are two distinct things. They could object to the claim, and if there were grounds, it could be tossed entirely. Accepting the claim means not objecting to it. It does not mean any particular percentage of the claim will be satisfied.
I followed the trials carefully and read several books that resulted from the criminal and civil trials. My impression is that the criminal defense took essentially all of O.J.’s net worth as of 1995. He had an annual income of about $400k from the NFL Players Association retirement plan, which was exempt from attachment by the civil judgments. I never saw anything that he did post 1995 that could have earned him significant money. His Nevada criminal defence was probably not cheap either, though nothing like the State of CA vs. Orenthal James Simpson.
Long story short - the media gets to publish a headline with “$58M” in it. Fred Goldman will get a pittance.
On a related note, here’s the late, great Norm MacDonald trashing Simpson on SNL.
