Socialism pays the party members well, while the peons starve and live in squalor.

Not too long ago, I watched the two season (6 episode) German TV series "Berlin Wall." Downloaded it from a torrent site.

Synopsis:

Three siblings with contrasting lives in 1989 East Germany - one a state employee, another an eco-activist, and the third resurfacing from the West. A poignant look at the Berlin Wall's fall and its aftermath.

GDR, 1989: Margot, Lotte and Silvia are three siblings that they cannot be more different. As a high-ranking employee of "commercial coordination", Margot is responsible for setting the state financially stabilized. Lotte, on the other hand, is beginning to engage in the rebelling environmental movement. The youngest sister Silvia disappeared from the lives of the other two a long time ago, until she reappears on the other side of the wall.

I was stationed in West Berlin in the mid 70’s (USAF). The contrast was stark, especially in the evenings. Kurfürstendamm Strasse would be lit up like a carnival with street vendors and cafes. A relatively short distance away you could look over the wall into the East and except for a few street lights, it was pitch black. I visited East Berlin a few times and it was an interesting contrast with broken sidewalks and very few items for sale in the stores.
