Syrian President Ahmed Sharaa has arrived in Washington for an official visit, just two days after the US formally revoked his status as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist.
The former Islamist militant will meet US President Donald Trump at the White House on Monday, 11 months after his rebel alliance ousted Bashar al-Assad.
Hours before his arrival in the US capital it was announced that Syrian security services had detained dozens of suspected members of the so-called Islamic State group.
Joint efforts to tackle what remains of the group in Syria are expected to be high on the agenda during Sharaa's talks with Trump.
Syrian authorities said 71 suspected members of the group were arrested, with weapons and explosives also seized.
Since taking power, Sharaa has looked to reestablish Syria's presence on the world stage after decades of isolation under the Assad regime and 13 years of civil war.

What happened? Trump is really reaching out. He's the fist Syrian president to visit the White House and a noted "turn to the West" by Syria.
All sanctions have now been lifted on them from today.
There is still the small issue of minorities and Christians being persecuted.
I call this a POSITIVE DEVELOPMENT.
You’re just not going to get benevolent, Jeffersonian democrats in most parts of the world.
It’s better to ask “Where do US interests lie?”
I’ve nothing against it but watch out... His forces which he’s supposed to keep under control are acting out of order in certain parts of the country

You have to think this repudiation is for real. Trump would know a lot more through the intelligence assessments

I keep wondering if this is one of those situations where you “keep your friends close, and your enemies closer.”
Sharaa would not be “in charge” if not for Turkey. While Iran and Russia will no doubt try to futz around, they no longer have their “man in Damascus.”
Sharaa is a jihadist. They might shave and wear a nice suit, but jihadists will jihad.
Iran is the ultimate goal regime change and this head chopper is sponsored by the Ottoman Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan who pick up spoils from a dismembered Iran.
Erdogan is loved by President Trump.
