With a cane in hand guiding her every step, former Miss Hawaii Cheryl Bartlett slowly walks along the garden of palms and hinahina she and her husband, Rogerio Araujo, grew together outside of their Makiki apartment.
“This is Roger’s pride and joy,” Bartlett said while pointing to the line of potted plants, which has given her some comfort after Araujo was taken by ICE agents last Tuesday.
“That morning is the last morning I saw him,” a whimpering Bartlett added. “Someone is trying to rip the bond, it’s very painful, and that someone is my own country.”
A native of Brazil, 57-year-old Araujo has been living on Oahu for several decades.

Well, bye.
Well, Aloha.
How is she representing a state while married to an illegal alien
A lot of them feel that way and never really wanted statehood. I lived on Oahu when statehood was granted. A lot of folks were not happy.

She may not even have known he was an illegal alien when she married him.
She was Miss Hawaii a LONG time ago ... Before hubby, I gather.
Trump takes out a bank loan and gets indicted. Biden commits the single biggest act of treason ever committed by a sitting POTUS and he's waltzing around free as air.
Yup I live on Oahu. True, but they are more than happy to live off the federal government via handouts. Nobody wants to work here.
LOL! Sounds like not much has changed in 70 years.
“Bartlett said they have been trying to secure citizenship for Araujo for about 17 years, but clerical errors delayed them.”

Clerical errors for 17 years? Nope not buying it.
She married him 17 years ago.
His deportation was put “on hold” by an immigration judge 13 years ago. This has been part of our insane immigration system, ongoing, for 13 years.
He could have self-deported before leaving himself open to deportation he could have had a much easier way to immigrate the legal way.

Umm OK, right. It might of happened once, and they just said screw it and let it ride the last 16 years.
On the bright side lil' ex. Miss Hawaii. I'm sure Brazil will let you into the country with your Husband, I hear it's a fine little $hit hole.
Well, there’s lotsa illegal alien sob stories, and they happen all the time.
They are just cherry picking the especially heart rending ones now that they need to make Trump look bad.
Backstory is probably a lot more complicated, usually problems with trying to do it all backwards: getting LPR status AFTER barging the gate. Usually requires going home, fill out app THERE, wait wait wait wait, maybe get in eventually.
That’s the part they don’t wanna do. The whole point was to get in/stay in. So smooth talkin’ Brazilian nightclub dude fastens himself to pretty gringa and uses her as the anchor.
Mighta worked out in the past when the problem was less massive. Now...
waaaaa, waaaaa how long did he have to become a legal citizen? Why didn’t you make sure he did?
2.) Why does the article leave out the circumstances of his detainment? Did he commit a crime and then get deported? That is usually what I am seeing. He probably got arrested for DUI and they nabbed him after his court appearance.
Clerical errors for 17 years? Nope not buying it.
