Despite all the hand wringing, what happened in New York City was tribal. It was the descendants of the European immigrants who came to this country between 1840 and 1920 plus Northeast Asians and the residual WASP population vs. blacks, Hispanics, Muslims, and South Asians plus leftist whites in the recently gentrified districts, especially in Brooklyn. Even Jews, generally the most liberal white group, had a majority voting for Cuomo or Sliwa. The bottom line was that the city's non-European descended population (Chinese and Korean Americans excepted) massively supported the communist Muslim.
