PING!...............
That kick turned out to be the difference in the game against a very bad team.
He also kicked a 70 yarder in preseason.
Weird thing is he’s also missed several chip shot field goals already this season. 🤷
The way they are playing doesn’t exactly make me want to run out and buy tickets for the next home game. 😏
Ping!.....................
Hat Tip to Tom Dempsey, may he RIP.
Amazing athletic feat actually. To kick a FG from your own territory on the field is mind boggling.
Looked like he hit it low and hard. With that lack of elevation, probably better than a 50/50 shot of having it blocked and it appears in this case, it went between hands and not over them. Talent with a good bit of luck. Good for him.
From Co-Pilot AI:
“Justin Tucker set his 66-yard field goal record *before* the NFL changed its rules on preparing kicking balls to enhance distance.**
Here’s the timeline breakdown:
### 🏈 Justin Tucker’s Record Field Goal
- **Date:** September 26, 2021
- **Distance:** 66 yards
- **Game:** Baltimore Ravens vs. Detroit Lions
- **Significance:** It was the longest successful field goal in NFL history at the time.
### 🧪 NFL Rule Change on Kicking Balls
- **Rule Change:** In **March 2025**, the NFL passed resolution G-2 allowing teams to **prepare and condition kicking balls (”K-balls”) before game day**, similar to how game balls are treated.
- **Impact:** This change gave kickers more control over ball feel and performance, contributing to a surge in long-distance field goals during the 2025 season.
### 🔍 What Changed?
Before 2025, kickers had to use freshly unwrapped “K-balls” with minimal preparation, which limited distance and consistency. The new rule allowed:
- Pre-game conditioning of kicking balls
- Practice with game-day balls
- Enhanced grip, feel, and flight characteristics
This shift helped kickers like Cam Little break Tucker’s record with a **68-yard field goal** in November 2025.”
Pretty impressive....
He’s got one helluva leg.
Are the shoes now steel-toed?
Little’s record won’t stand for decades as Dempsey’s did. I’d bet good money on that.
It’s way different from the days when both teams used the same ball and there were no k balls.
They had to kick or punt whichever ball was in the game.
Forgive my ignorance.
So, does that mean the line of scrimmage was on the Jags 42 yard line?
He had kicked one from their own 40 in preseason, correct?
You are correct on all counts.
👍
Finally a record kick doesn’t occur against the Lions.
No - that is where he kicked it from. The line of scrimmage was approximately the 49 yard line of Jacksonville.
Rule of thumb for fieldd goals: add 18 yards from the line of scrimmage for the true distance. Approximately 8 yards behind the line of scrimmage, and ten yards because the post is at the back of the end zone.
They are now allowed to massage their balls before the kick...........
Tom held the record for over 40 years
