Mississippi mom shoots dead monkey that escaped from overturned truck to protect her children: ‘I did what any other mother would do’

A Mississippi mom shot dead one of the aggressive monkeys that escaped from an overturned truck last week to protect her young children.

Jessica Bond Ferguson said she and other Heidelberg residents had been on high alert after word spread that monkeys — believed to be carrying dangerous diseases but later confirmed by officials not to be — had been roaming loose since Tuesday.

Early Sunday morning, her 16-year-old son ran into the house, claiming he had seen one of the animals in the yard.

“I shot at it and it just stood there, and I shot again, and he backed up and that’s when he fell.”

With police and animal control still, the mother of five said she decided to shoot the monkey, fearing it would get away and possibly would become a threat to children at another house in the neighborhood.

In my case, since I was in my driveway, backing out, the kids said, there’s a snake, I for sure didn’t want anyone taking time identifying it, my thought was the same as when I see a gigantic roach, I don’t want to wonder where it is in the house if I miss killing it, I had my axe handy and that was the end of him/it

My husband, when I once ran inside to tell him there was a snake in the backyard, if he’s home he’s in charge of extermination, he said, “Oh! Can I see it!?”

Knock yourself out. City girl farm boy.

They want to identify it, eliminate it in a proper…whatever. I don’t want it near my kids, me, neighbors, pets, in my house, anything else is fine. Have at it

I don’t want to tell my neighbors I saw it but let it continue running around the neighborhood

Spank the Monkey and get ready for some silly fun! See how fast you can swing your hand and give that cheeky monkey a mischievous swat.

Reminds me of some of the joke cartoons floating around construction sites in the 1970s about needing a license to shoot Porch Monkeys signed by sheriff I.M. White.

And that is all I will say about that.

Well played, I should have thought of that earlier. Came to do it now, and here you are.

Such a classic ongoing sketch. What isn’t fun about making fun about nihilistic Germans?

I’m surprised she didn’t skin it and serve it with some collard greens

Why would someone shoot a dead monkey?

She could have spanked it, no?

Thing is, without a weapon, no human is any real match for a frightened or enraged primate of nearly any size. I knew a guy who worked with them in research, and said if one of them decided to attack you, without a weapon you were going to come out on the bad side.

He said that even if they are tame or semi-tame, we are simply not used to the kind of strength a wild animal can revert to if it gets violent.

I would shoot it. No doubt.

Why would someone shoot a dead monkey?

Because it was a Zomboon.

We women are hard wired to not allow wildlife in, around, near our homes

People laugh at us if we eek at a mouse. Bet we know it carries nasty viruses, can chew through our electrical, reproduce in our homes, and it is not their home, or get into our food. Meaning a wild animal is a danger. The smaller ones are worse. They are sneaky and they hide

When we set out to kill an animal threatening our home, we kill it

I for one notice that she killed it with one shot Of course she shot it again. Again, that was always Jack bauer’s advice

She wasn’t out there doing a drama queen shaking of her hands. Jumping around, being a stereotypical damsel in distress.

She found her weapon while keeping an eagle eye on that nasty, unpredictable beast likely infected with experimental viruses, and she knew it, she snuck outside quietly, instructing her 16 year old to be still and quiet, and she aimed and got the ring in one shot

Good girl!

No sense shooting a live one.. it's the primate version of shooting fish in a barrel.

It is amusing to me to watch many of the guys here just criticize and not even read the article or not notice what a good shot this woman was

It is almost worse than when John Candy as barf in Spaceballs says to the princess who shot up the whole eenemy unit while the gusts stood by, he says, “good shooting.” The guys ate in awe, slack jawed, nodding in agreement, then Candy says, “for a girl”. They all nod in agreement

And just like the princess says “you don’t understand, they were…” threatening something vital to her

Sorry, I forgot to add the sarcasm tag.

Yes, all us Uppity Yankees still thinks everyone who lives in Mississippi lives in a log cabin or tin roofed shack with five hound dogs.
They eat racoon and pick cotton. Don’t y’all?

“said she decided to shoot the monkey, fearing it would get away and possibly would become a threat to children at another house in the neighborhood.”

So the monkey was not an immediate threat to her children or any other children, making the headline complete bs. She just wanted to shoot it and that was her excuse. The “might become a threat” standard would justify shooting half the world’s population.
