.357 has a ton of penetration and high speed.
I’ve had a couple of .45 and can attest shooting at anything over 30 feet you have to factor in bullet drop.
The bullets are big but they are pretty slow.

The larger caliber is needed exactly within 30 feet for a charging bear. Beyond that a rifle would be more accurate. A shotgun with slugs work, but in case of surprise may not be handy.
