Why does the Fifth Third Bank have that name?

It’s awful, just the worst name in corporate history. Fifth and Third merged, but Fifth was somewhat larger. The website is 53.com, you’d think that Bank 53 or 53 Bank or even just 53 would be better, and certainly no worse. One and two-thirds Bank would probably have been a better choice.

I have always thought that was the stupidest name ever for a bank.

On June 1, 1908, Third National Bank and Fifth National Bank merged to become the Fifth–Third National Bank of Cincinnati.

I don’t know, but if Comerica Park in Detroit (Tigers) is renamed to “Fifth Third Park”, it won’t be any kind of improvement.
