It's the current fashion, inspired by the growing popularity of OLED screens, which most new smartphones have. With OLED, pixels actually turn off for black, are not just masked, which saves significant electricity and battery use. When computers started out, they were all black background. It was Bill Gate's Microsoft Windows that made white background the norm, which led to Al Gore's global warming.
