I sometimes wonder if historians will
use free republic as an example of
conservatives in the first half of the
21st century.

I would always use the sarcasm tag.
But I over analyze stuff.
Of course...I completely get that. I don’t think you are over-analyzing it at all.
Even with the missing cues, these communications can still be intentionally and unintentionally misunderstood. People all are susceptible to unintentional understanding. It is why people discuss, admire, and excoriate various communication skills.
But there are people who view communications as something to intentionally bend, fold, spindle and mutilate. They always have.
And they are, and always will. Blatantly.
For example, before the November 2024 election, my Republican Town Committee was doing a corner standout in favor of Trump in one of the bluest communities in one of the bluest states in the union.
We got a lot of verbal abuse (and more honks and thumbs-up than you might expect) and one guy pulled up and began haranguing us, calling us Nazis and such, and I had enough and walked up and said sarcastically “Oh sure. I’m a Nazi. We’re all Nazis here.”
Now, observing it and listening to the tone of my voice, you would never think I was saying in a tone of proud ownership: “Oh sure. I’m a Nazi. We’re all Nazis here.”
It was apparent.
But there are people today, and in the future who would, with a straight face report to the world: “When I confronted the conservatives, one of them freely admitted they were Nazis.”
And we all know that Leftists proudly write history not as it was, but as it suits their political needs and agendas.
So there isn’t any way of getting around that.
