Yes, ten years ago or so all the Linux installers had this problem. For some reason it would decide on it’s own you were mistaken and that was not really the target drive you wanted even though everything was absolutely configured correctly. So it became standard recommended practice to unhook all the others just to be safe. Sometimes even if you had to take the back off and unhook the internal on a laptop to protect it. It was a real problem that it took them awhile to find and fix. There was a ghost in the works.

which one is that so i stay away from it? (I try diff versions from time to time)

So, you didn't appreciate my witty clue? Who is the woman standing next Fester in the picture from the Movie Addams Family Values. Just add ian to her name and you will know. It is a great operating system, but its installation routine can sometimes go astray.

Yes, that is where I have downloaded the “free” version most recently.

https://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/macrium_reflect_free_edition.html

I don't like how they make it a little difficult to find the actual download with all the distracting crap. The actual download links are directly below the yellow “official mirror” block.

I used Norton Ghost from Hiren's Boot CD for many years even after they removed it from the primary version. But I eventually switched to the free versions of Macrium Reflect and MiniTool Partition Wizard.

No... you guys are no fun. Fester's girlfriend and wife in Addams Family Values was Debbie.

I didn't want to mention the name of the OS directly because it is an important and very good OS that I use all the time for server duties. It is also what Ubuntu Server which is a backbone in my home lab is built on.

You have to take precautions when building a hard drive or NVME that multi-boots because many OS's don't play nice with one another.

None of this really applies to cloning disks which is basically a daily task for some here and takes just a few minutes.

Of course it's been years now but my favorite distro is Debian. I started with Ubuntu and hated it. I still hate it. Used Puppy Linux for a bunch of stuff, have played with CentOS (locally & server) and Mint.

I have at least 4 laptops that dual or multi boot some sort of windows and linux.

I used to triple boot on the same NVME drive- but now do seperate drives, one for windows 10 and 11, and one for linux as the main first boot drive- saves a lot of headaches that way-

It is the installer app they use... The installer is a separate entity from the OS itself.

Worthless computer?

I’ve had it less than a year, it is very fast (for anything besides maybe AI development or advanced gaming), and (including a few of these enhancements), it’s the most I can afford. It’ll also end up half or less the cost of anything with similar performance I could find new, even on Black Friday. If anything I turn up or someone teaches me can help some other FReeper with a tight budget to stay online, efficient, and connected, too, well, that’s gravy!

Occasionally, a piece of info. pops out new to others, as well, and, sometimes the discussions establish a little rapport with others with a different take on conservatism. (I’m basically a Reagan Republican with a FEW reservations, such as his immigration policy.)

If the Robinsons see fit to can the “General Chat” category, and a long list of topics they have suggested, to concentrate only on politics, then, so be it. So far, however, they have not.

And... I already do participate in a number of online help and discussion groups. Cars(4!), fishing, electronics, sci-fi, and other groups. Here, we have quite a number of FReepers knowledgeable about computers, and, mostly we have fun with it. That’s a GOOD thing.

So... who or what are you going to attack next? The music threads? The monthly Garden thread? Why don’t you attack the posters who post the same idiotic memes 100’s of times?

In this case, if the OS (C:) drive gets whacked, one way or another, I have a fast response: I just boot up off the “reserve” drive and am operational in a minute or so.

This machine has 3 SSD’s, the OS drive being a NVMe. The “second” is the data drive (pulled from my Win 10 Pro machine that got killed by a Microsoft update*). The 3rd SSD (current project & subject of this thread) is going to be the “quick sub” for the OS drive.

*The Win 10 Pro machine is a real mystery. After a Windows update, about a month ago, it failed to reboot, and, long story short, I’ve been unable to recover. (I can post the link to that thread if you like.) It WOULD run off ITS “quick sub” (3rd) drive, because it lacked the OS update, evidently. However, if I go online on that machine, Microsoft initiates forcing the “killer” update, so I can only use that machine offline, at present.. . (Boot also fails with a new recovery bootable USB drive — evidently because of the same problem with the update, which is of course on the “up to date” recovery drive. Agghh!) I just needed to get running quickly, so, the Win 10 Pro machine is set aside - for future investigation, or, I’ll eventually install Linux on it. Sometimes, best laid plans go awry... :-(

Lol, I was about to comment to that ignorant perspective also. Well done...

One of the first important priorities to save this country is to beat the system in any way possible. Do not let “consumerism” dictate and guardrail our independence. So any DYI topics and knowledge shared to do this is absolutely fighting against the system and efforts towards saving our country.

In fact one of the most important... Independence from the Machine...

Besides, I wonder why so many here self ordain themselves as the hall monitor of allowable content? They have no right to speak for the rest of us or try to represent the whole or what we should all be limited to discuss.

That smacks of oppression over free speech. Someone has an authoritarian control complex...

Oh, boy, I have a lot of people to thank! Great discussion!!

I’ll be shutting down momentarily to do the clone job, and, I’ll unplug that data drive when the power is off “just in case”. It’s backed up, but, who needs the hassle...

My new PCIe card to give me a couple rear USB 3.2 gen2 ports, and my 100/1000 Ethernet switch got here an hour ago too.

It’s a three’fer! :-)

Yeah, I had a lot nastier “conclusion” at the end of my reply to that poster, but, I reconsidered... :-)

Shutting down, to unplug that data drive, and install my new hardware too. :-)

What I’m seeing claimed on Ubiquiti forums is that modern SSDs can handle so many rewrites that even in surveillance use, you’re typically good for 10 years and more.

Interesting note on the "last free version" of Macrium...v8.0.7783

Today I used an older Macrium version rescue CD (8.0.6.69xx?) I have been using to reboot and make an image of my Linux Mint 21 boot disk. No problems.

For schnits and giggles, I downloaded the latest one you posted the link to. I burned a rescue boot DVD and booted several machines with it...Linux Mint 21, New mini PC (Win11) with external DVD drive and a Win7 laptop with external DVD drive AND USB external.

The new version (8.0.7783) did NOT have an option to Restore from image listed...whereas the older version did have that option. The onboard Linux DVD drive did not show a restore from image option with new version as well as external USB drive. This will be a problem if I need to restore an image in case of catastrophic failure of media. Anyone else experiencing this?

I went on a Mini-PC buying spree over the last few months. Every one of them were on sale for prices which made them irresistible to me. The real challenge has been what to do with them all. Their tiny footprint makes them ideal for headless use where you hide them away and use them with other computers.

The latest one was a Prime Day Deal and is extremely capable. It is going to be used with an oculink dock and an Nvidia RTX 3060 12GB GPU as a local server for AI Apps which generate high resolution pictures, videos, and music along with many other AI models designed to provide all sorts of interesting output.
