Easy. It implies a difference in male and female versions. Same with actors and actresses. The gals don’t like it for some reason. I guess the feminists convinced them it was beneath their dignity to be thought of as anything different from a man.

That's probably why "server" is replacing "waiter" and "waitress" at restaurants. Like "steward" and "stewardess," "waiter" and "waitress" connote trust an responsibility, whereas a "server" seems more like a slave.
