Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers All-Pro running back and Boise State star Doug Martin, 36, died while in police custody following a struggle with officers who were investigating a break-in at a home in Oakland, California, on Sunday according to the Oakland Police Department. Martin became unresponsive after his arrest and was transported to the hospital after receiving medical aid on the scene.
A cause of death has not been released, though the Alameda County Coroner's Office will do an autopsy to determine what hapened.
A first-round pick by Tampa Bay in the 2012 NFL Draft, Martin played seven seasons in the pros prior to his career ending after a brief stint with the Oakland Raiders.
Oakland police said Monday that Martin "was involved in a break-in at a residence in Oakland," and as officers were attempting to detain him, a "brief struggle occurred" with Martin becoming unresponsive after being taken into custody.
"Paramedics responded to the scene, provided medical aid, and transported Martin to a local hospital, where he later died," police said. "Since Saturday, OPD has been in contact with Martin's family. The family has requested privacy as they grieve this tragic loss. No additional details are being released at this time, as this remains an ongoing investigation."
The officers involved in the incident have been placed on paid administrative leave.
Martin rushed for 1,454 yards as a rookie in 2012 before playing in only 17 games over his next two years with the Buccaneers. Martin's resurgence was notable in 2015 when he posted an All-Pro and Pro Bowl season in which he rushed for 1,402 yards.

Maybe it was the thrill and glamour of a life of crime that got to him! Imagining himself as some kind of David Nivenesque character, surreptitiously scaling high walls and foiling laser-beam security systems, karate-chopping guards, and leaving a single long-stem rose at the scene of each of his crimes, may have been too much for him.
If he wanted something to bring in a little money, he could easily be a high school football coach.
You have no sense of romance or adventure!

ESPN to have it’s George Floyd moment in 5, 4, 3,
Marshawn Lynch (Seattle Seahawks) gave some interview right after he retired. Telling the players to “take care of their chicken” (money). Although he still seems to drink too much and wreck his fancy cars, he has done well with his marketing, and also giving back to his community.
His teammate Richard Sherman was arrested awhile ago for assaulting his former wife (or her parents?) after he broke into their home while drunk.
I think he paid the penalty and is now doing well with his podcasts.
And then there is Earl Thomas. He and his brother were in the same bed with two women at some hotel. Earl’s wife found out, grabbed Earl’s gun and headed to the hotel. Somehow got into the room and pointed the gun at Earl’s head.
She told the cops that she only wanted to scare him. It was “empty”. She told them it doesn’t even have the “clip” in it. Of course there was a round in the chamber that she hadn’t thought about! (Luckily she didn’t fire it.)
I suspect you're right. See #19.
A lot of ex hockey and football players have developed mental issues from CTE that just don't get the attention it needs.
One hockey player that comes to mind is Joe Murphy....
It’s been watered down, but Florida has the Baker Act for a reason.
You can take the man out of the ghetto…
Doesn’t mean they’ll take them in. Budgets. The buck passing when one is lazy.
But...
Florida’s a red state, right?
Their legislature wouldn’t do that, would it?!
As a former defensive lineman, we saw ourselves as pitbulls, and anyone with the football wore a Milkbone™ jock strap.

Time to check is it CTE?
