Interesting question. There are some lazy teachers who just don’t care. Just as there are some lazy cops, lazy plumbers, etc. But the majority of teachers do care, and care very much.

I taught in an inner city public high school for many years. Even in my worst classes most of the kids were okay. They had attendance problems. But when they were there, they tried. They wanted to learn.

Unfortunately, most classes also had at least a few disruptive students. Administrators would not suspend those students because they (the administrators) received bonuses and promotions for keeping suspensions low.

So lessons got disrupted. And the good kids didn’t learn nearly as much as they could have. It was heartbreaking.
