The first step in solving the problem is correctly identifying it.

The problem is not illiteracy (being unable to read or write) but anti-literacy (being unwilling to read or write).

In their defense, who would want to read the garbage they're being intentionally fed? Back in the day, writers could write. Now, too many are propagandists at best and can't write worth a damn anyway.

“Why Johnny Can’t Read” was a best-seller in 1955!

A must-read on this subject is, Amusing Ourselves to Death by Neil Postman.

The United States is a country that is willfully illiterate. (It's not that Americans can't read; it's that they won't.)

Not sliding.

Falling off a cliff like lemmings.

Probably technology, not learning to think critically and most importantly, how is reading taught these days?

try the Raising Robust Readers program. I learned phonetically in the early ‘60s, but this makes soooo much sense!

“Take children beyond the alphabet to the world of phonograms. Phonograms show the 72 sounds in [ALL] the words we read. They may have 1 letter (the alphabet) or 2. 3 or 4 letter combinations; but only make one sound. Our multi-sensory songs, gestures and play-filled activities make them easy to learn and fun to teach.”

Sliding? It is being deliberately perpetrated by the people who run the schools. To create the kind of subject population the Democrats want.

1958: Chapter 8 - 45 goals of communism

17. Get control of the schools. Use them as transmission belts for Socialism and current Communist propaganda. Soften the curriculum. Get control of teachers associations. Put the party line in textbooks.
18. Gain control of all student newspapers.
19. Use student riots to foment public protests against programs or organizations that are under Communist attack.
24.Eliminate all laws governing obscenity by calling them "censorship" and a violation of free speech and free press.
25. Break down cultural standards of morality by promoting pornography and obscenity in books, magazines, motion pictures, radio and TV.
26. Present homosexuality, degeneracy and promiscuity as "normal, natural and healthy."
28. Eliminate prayer or any phase of religious expression in the schools on the grounds that it violates the principle of "separation of church and state"
29. Discredit the American Constitution by calling it inadequate, old fashioned, out of step with modern needs, a hindrance to cooperation between nations on a worldwide basis.
30. Discredit the American founding fathers. Present them as selfish aristocrats who had no concern for the "common man."
31. Belittle all forms of American culture and discourage the teaching of American history on the ground that it was only a minor part of "the big picture." Give more emphasis to Russian history since the Communists took over.
32. Support any socialist movement to give centralized control over any part of the culture – education, social agencies, welfare programs, mental health clinics, etc.
41. Emphasize the need to raise children away from the negative influence of parents. Attribute prejudices, mental blocks and retarding of children to suppressive influence of parents.
42. Create the impression that violence and insurrection are legitimate aspects of the American tradition; that students and special interest groups should rise up and make a "united force" to solve economic, political or social problems.

At the start of the century, American students registered steady improvement in math and reading. Around 2013, this progress began to stall out, and then to backslide dramatically. What exactly went wrong?

Commie Core, with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation pushing it all over the place.
