Conner Mantz came into the Bank of America Chicago Marathon with the goal of setting a new American record, and that’s exactly what he did Sunday.

After finishing the Boston Marathon in 2:05:08 earlier this year, Mantz completed the Chicago course in an unofficial time of 2:04:43, smashing an American record that had stood for more than two decades.

Overall, Mantz finished in fourth place in the race, with Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo winning the race in only his second-ever marathon.

Natosha Rogers was the top-finishing American woman, completing the race in 2:23:28 and finishing sixth overall. Hawi Feysa of Ethiopia won the race in her American debut, besting Megertu Alemu by more than two minutes.

The quest to break the American record has been ongoing since 2002, when Khalid Khannouchi set the pace at the London Marathon with a time of 2:05:38.

Mantz bested that time in Boston earlier this year, but that race was not record-eligible according to officials.

That wasn’t the case on Sunday in Chicago, as Mantz wound his way around the 26.2 mile course and kept up his record pace throughout, finishing just two minutes off of the winning pace in the Windy City.

If I were in Chicago, I’d be running as fast as I can, too.
