The first German Jewish high official was Walter Rathenau, the Foreign Minister, in 1921, over a decade before his American counterpart, Henry Morgenthau. 20 years later, German Jews were being ushered into gas chambers, with the lucky few deemed fit for slave labor fed starvation rations so long as they were able to work. Those who were injured or fell ill were shot. The majority of slave laborers died of malnutrition or summary execution.

Jews have had Golden Ages as minorities, punctuated, by periods of large scale massacre. The question was the equivalent of asking a Christian whether he was a Christian first or an American first. If the government started persecuting Christians, would he go along or even sign on wholeheartedly?
