Beginning in the early 20th century, it was traditional to celebrate “Navy Day” as 27 October—the birthday of Theodore Roosevelt, who was a strong Navy advocate before and during his presidency. Then, in 1972, Chief of Naval Operations Elmo Zumwalt issued a decree recognizing 13 October as the U.S. Navy’s official birthday. In light of what transpired in October of 1775, that date seems entirely appropriate.”
