Penn State Fires Longtime HC James Franklin After Disastrous 3-3 Start

The school fired the longtime head coach on Sunday, less than 24 hours after a 22-21 home loss to Northwestern all but ended whatever remote chance the preseason No. 2 team had of reaching the College Football Playoff.

Terry Smith will serve as the interim head coach for the rest of the season for the Nittany Lions (3-3, 0-3 Big Ten), who began the year with hopes of winning the national title only to have those hopes evaporate by early October amid a string of losses, each one more stinging than the last.

The headline number is $56 MM but I found this on Penn Live “ However, the contract was amended in 2024 without publicly released terms.”

From making the semifinal, albeit a sham run as PSU beat SMU and BSE, of the inaugural college football playoff to fired,

No surprise- he had to be fired...i said in another college football thread before the UCLA game Franklin would not make it to whatever secondary bowl game they are invited to..never should have lost to ND in the semi-finals last season.

Not moving on from Drew Allar was a HUGE mistake and Jim Knowles has been a complete disappointment...

Luke Fickell of Wisconsin will be gone before seasons end...

Greg Schiano of Rutgers could be let go after the season and before the bowl game...

I heard $50. mil. I watched the game yesterday. I knew he was a deadman walking. I think Whisky fires Fickel and I wouldn’t be surprised if MSU bails on Smith. No one wants to be at the bottom in the Big 10.

And Indiana freakin U in the top 5!!!!

I’d love it to be Gruden, but I doubt it. Ruhle is a non-starter I think. Maybe Manny Diaz.

I thought they would wait till the end of the season. 3 - 3 is not a total disaster (although the loss to UCLA really stings... but UCLA did win again yesterday) and who knows, PSU may still salvage something this season.

When you are one of four teams to be favored to win the NT and you lose to a pair of mediocre teams, 3-3 is horrendous...even Clemson lost to decent teams...

Cig is also from PA. I don’t care about his age. If he’ll jump, I’d take him in a heartbeat - at any price.

Am I the only one who hates these mid-season firings? Admittedly, I have no dog in the Penn State fight, but I don’t get firing someone who so recently had his team at the top…you know he can coach; it’s just a matter of righting the ship again.

Well, anyway…I hope the fan base is satisfied and that the right new coach is found quickly. The players deserve it!
