Moody Blues’ John Lodge Dies ‘Suddenly and Unexpectedly’
Ultimate Classic Rock ^ | 10/10/2025 | Nick DeRiso

Stalwart Moody Blues member John Lodge has died, his family confirms in an official statement. No immediate cause of death was reported. He was 82.

"Our darling husband, father, grandfather, father-in-law and brother has been suddenly and unexpectedly taken from us," according to the news release. "John peacefully slipped away surrounded by his loved-ones and the sounds of The Everly Brothers and Buddy Holly. We will forever miss his love, smile, kindness, and his absolute and never-ending support."

Lodge helped shift the previously R&B-leaning Moody Blues toward progressive rock with 1967's platinum-selling Days of Future Passed, which was also the first to feature Justin Hayward. The Moody Blues last toured together in 2018, following a 50th anniversary celebration of the same seminal LP. Lodge then played his own solo tour in 2024 focused on the album.

John Lodge has also been married to the same woman for 57 years- unusual by any standards, never mind rock and roll.

I think I have shared with you previously that original Moody Blues member Graem Edge (drummer) lived nearby until his death in 2021. He was a very friendly chap.

Yep. They often kicked off annual concert tours at the Van Wezel in Sarasota. Attended quite a few of them up until the band dissolved upon Graem Edge’s death.

Love that story! Thank you for sharing it. It’s a huge coincidence because, right here on Free Republic, I posted my own Graeme Edge story at the time of his death.

I had a lifelong best friend who happened to also be a beautiful blonde. She was like a sister to me. Goofy, lovely, fun. One year, in the mid 90s, she worked at a luxury hotel in Denver as a junior manager of Guest Services.

Of course, in her ditzy happy go lucky way, she didn’t have a clue as to who the Moody Blues were, but she knew they were VIPs in her hotel. One night, one of them called down for an odd request. (I don’t remember what, per this story.) My dear friend Cathy brought it up to his suite. The older gentleman used his charms to entice Cathy to stay.

Well, the little harlot slept with him!

So, the next day or so, Cathy calls me to tell me that she met a guy in a famous English band!

“He had a really weird name”, she giggled. “and I sort of slept with him... Graeme Edge... Do you know of him??”

I was IRATE! “Cathy! Are you telling me that you fooled around with a dude 30 years older than you... One of my musical HERO LEGENDS... and you don’t even know WHO HE IS?? HE’S probably MARRIED!!”

Yep. She didn’t know him, his music, or the band...and she slutted around on the job with him.

I gave her hell about that story until she, sadly, died from cancer in 2018.

I still shake my head about the weirdness of it, to this day. Never saw Graeme in the same light. It’s like he seduced my kid sister. Ew! 😜

LOL, I knew a fan of ac/dc would appear - waiting for the KISS fan to appear as well.

Not my favorite, but husband loved ac/dc.

That is kind of funny-she didn’t know exactly who he was, but...she knew he was famous in some way!

It is interesting to me how are lives meander, criss-crossing in and out of other people’s lives, but in the end, when you look back, it all seems like a linear journey!

I did not even know Graeme Edge had passed away in 2021...I missed it.

Anyway, this is one of the things I do like about Free Republic, stories like yours. The political stuff does get tiresome sometimes, and reading posts like yours is a welcome break!

Thank you...:)
