Unraveling the Scriptures - 18 Forbidden Secrets of SODOM: What Really Happened There

Welcome to the Unraveling the Scriptures channel. Did you know that in Sodom, women dressed in garments so light and translucent that almost nothing was hidden from the eyes of those who beheld them? On nights of celebration, it was common for them to adorn their bodies with pigments made from liquid gold, creating designs that shimmerred when touched by the silvery light of the moon. With every movement, these reflections transformed the female figures into almost supernatural apparitions, a mixture of sensuality and mystery, as if they themselves were part of the cosmic spectacle unfolding above them.

I can't guarantee everything presented in this video will prove to be accurate. Some of it, like the nature of the comet or meteorite I think is speculative. However, the historical narrative presented in these videos I have found to be reasonably accurate and being able to fill in some of the details that the Bible leaves out or left to the imagination.

It's entertaining enough to want to view it for most people, but it's also something that you can play while you are driving around or just puttering around the house.

Some videos are based on Jewish mysticism and stuff like that, so it is a bit of buyer’s beware. Just being honest.

That channel is much more about mysticism than Biblical accuracy. I agree it can be entertaining but after having watched several episodes in the past I decided to avoid it as it dances to close to deception and / or confusion of the scriptures.

I personally would not recommend the channel.

The archeology shows Sodom has Minoan pottery. We know that this Greek Island practiced boy rape as a regular thing.

Also, detailed archeology shows a burn layer. But it definitely shows items in the shadow of a stone wall were not burned

This situation is consistent with a massive airburst explosion.

“I can’t guarantee everything presented in this video will prove to be accurate. “

None of it, none of the text, uses scripture as evidence. You have to just take the speakers word that what the speaker says was fact.

Not a way to study anything from the Bible, including Sodom.

According to Jewish scholars throughout the ages, the biggest crime committed by the people of Sodom and Gomorrah was their failure to be kind to strangers, and to be charitable amongst themselves (IOW, to be kind within their own community). Sexual depravity of one kind or another is obviously not a good thing, but that has been overemphasized, particularly by Hollywood. Additionally, those two cities would not have been too far out of the norm regarding sexual deviancy for that era and the pagan culture in which they lived.

Lack of hospitality towards strangers was not the biggest offense and to intimate it was more relevant than the sexual immorality is a deception and ignoring scripture.

The bible clearly states several reasons for the destruction, being evil to strangers is one, denying those in need was another.

See Jude 1:7 Just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities, which likewise indulged in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural desire, serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire.

We should actually read God’s Word which literally tells us why those cities were destroyed.

Yeah ... trying to violently gang-rape strangers is definitely "unkind". I am particularly disgusted with "scholars" who try to downplay the violent sexual perversion at the heart of the problems with Sodom. Makes me wonder what those "scholars" aren't telling ... about themselves.

“According to Jewish scholars throughout the ages, the biggest crime committed by the people of Sodom and Gomorrah was their failure to be kind to strangers, and to be charitable amongst themselves”

The Bible talks about these things, too:

Ezekiel 16:49 NKJV
Look, this was the iniquity of your sister Sodom: She and her daughter had pride, fullness of food, and abundance of idleness; neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy.

But this is a symbolic comparison. Ezekiel reproves Israel, Judea, and the surrounding nations. He compares Israel and Judea to Sodom because their disobedience and rebellion.

This is the original account of Sodom:

Genesis 13:13 NKJV
But the men of Sodom were exceedingly wicked and sinful against the Lord.

And then the specific actions were that ALL of the men of Sodom gathered to rape the two sojourning “men” who traveled to their city:

Genesis 19:4-5 NKJV
Now before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, both old and young, all the people from every quarter, surrounded the house. And they called to Lot and said to him, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us that we may know them carnally.”

This was the sin of the original (rather than figurative) Sodom: all of the men were homosexual rapists.

“Sexual depravity of one kind or another is obviously not a good thing, but that has been overemphasized, particularly by Hollywood.”

Inhospitality was not the main problem, but it was a consequence of their real problem. And trying to rape sojourners is very inhospitable.

“Additionally, those two cities would not have been too far out of the norm regarding sexual deviancy for that era and the pagan culture in which they lived.”

The problem is not when a city or nation has people who rape, murder, or do other horrible things. The problem is when it becomes the norm, when everyone is doing these things, and they are spending every waking hour fixated on doing them.

Ever notice that people who identify as homosexual or transgender are fixated on this so that it defines who they are?

“This is the original account of Sodom:”
————————
You then go on to quote verbatim from the NKJV of the Hebrew Bible. Forgive me if I don’t place too terribly much weight upon the accuracy of the modern translation of a translation into English in 1611, which was a translation from Latin, which was a translation from Greek, which was a translation from Hebrew, during which time there were numerous inaccuracies, additions, subtractions, and outright fabrications introduced into the text (some on purpose, most by accident, but errors, etc. nonetheless. I will stick with the original Hebrew in which the Hebrew Bible was written, and trust the words of dozens of different and highly respected rabbis who lived over the course of thousands of years, who grew up reading and writing in Hebrew for their entire lives, and who spent all of their adult lives trying to properly interpret the words of that Bible using the Oral Torah given to Moses by God when he was on Mount Sinai for 40 days, which was passed down through the generations. So, if those great rabbis, who lived over the course of thousands of years, have come to the conclusion that the principal sin that the people in Sodom and Gomorrah were committing was a lack of compassion toward those who were downtrodden in some way or other, I will tend to believe them more than some random guy, who’s probably pretty smart and probably very well-intentioned, who reads a much distorted version of the Bible, without any specific knowledge of what it says in its original language. No disrespect to you is intended whatsoever - I just have more for the opinions of those rabbis.

By the way, I do happen to agree with you regarding the psychology of those people who are homosexual. Not every single one of them, mind you, but most of them that I have met. I have noticed over time that those people whom I know who are of that persuasion tend to be extremely narcissistic. In a couple of cases, that’s being quite generous. On the other hand, sometimes those people are otherwise thoroughly decent, and just wish to be left alone by the rest of society to do whatever it is they wish to do between consenting adults and behind closed doors. In that case, what they do is between them and God, and not our business. God gave them free will to make their own decisions, just as He gave everyone else free will to make their own set of decisions. Like anything else, they are on a bell curve. But I do believe that their bell curve is shifted toward the side of narcissism, with all that implies.

I’d like to see the sources and evidence behind this video. Not much Biblical.

Genesis 14 describes a rebellion of cities, including Sodom & Gomorrah, against the king of Elam and a few others. Sodom was conquered and Abram’s nephew Lot was captured. With 318 men, Abram chased the victorious armies down and rescued Lot. This sounds like Sodom was probably a mean village rather than the great, wealthy metropolis described. And they apparently had some really fine women, so why would the men turn into turd burglars?

While the KJV was based on the older ben Chayyim tradition of the Masoretic Text, the NKJV’s Old Testament is based on the more modern and earlier Leningrad Manuscript B19a, which is the basis for modern critical Hebrew editions like Biblia Hebraica. The NKJV also notes textual variations from other sources in its footnotes. Neither rely on prior translations from Greek (Septuigint) or Latin (Vulgate) for meaning, only for structure and style.

I believe the written Torah considered authoritative by most Jewish scholars is nearly identical to the texts modern Christian Bibles rely on. However, your point about the Oral Torah is well-taken.

Christianity is predicated on the idea of continuity with the Hebrews scriptures but holding that there was an unrevealed mystery when they were given, and even Moses himself did not know that mystery until Christ was revealed. The Greek scriptures tell of Moses and Elijah meeting Christ on a mountain where they spoke with Him concerning the death He was about to experience and what it would accomplish.

“if those great rabbis, who lived over the course of thousands of years, have come to the conclusion that the principal sin that the people in Sodom and Gomorrah were committing was a lack of compassion toward those who were downtrodden in some way or other, I will tend to believe them more than some random guy... sometimes those people are otherwise thoroughly decent, and just wish to be left alone by the rest of society to do whatever it is they wish to do between consenting adults and behind closed doors. In that case, what they do is between them and God, and not our business.”

Perhaps what the great rabbis were addressing is the underlying reasons God has rules governing sexuality. If you think about it, why would God care what we eat, drink, or how we use our bodies for sexual pleasure? How does it affect Him? I think He is concerned because He designed our bodies and knows how these things will affect us and others. So, if we engage in deviant sexual behaviors it might be that this inevitably causes us to mistreat and abuse others, or at least be more inclined to do so. To me, the case of Sodom makes an evident connection between the two. Or really, any time sex is coerced.

But also, the account describes God coming down because of the cry of the city of Sodom. So, the idea of “lack of compassion toward those who were downtrodden” would be applicable, but it makes me question if the cries God was responding to were not instances of mere neglect. Rather, I suspect, based on the behavior of all the men of the city toward the angels, that the cries were the result of their despicable actions. And I don’t think I’m reading into the story too much because, if the actions the people of Sodom took were not utterly deplorable, it would seem to paint God as unmerciful to destroy the entire city with fire.

Remember that God was even willing to spare the city for the sake of just ten righteous men because of the petition Abraham made to God on behalf of his relatives there. God, instead, rescued only them because He could not find even ten. There was only one. Lot. And even he was not living as he should.

Contrast how Sodom treated the two angels with the way they were treated by Abraham. He was hospitable:

Genesis 18:1-5 NKJV
Then the Lord appeared to him by the terebinth trees of Mamre, as he was sitting in the tent door in the heat of the day. So he lifted his eyes and looked, and behold, three men were standing by him; and when he saw them, he ran from the tent door to meet them, and bowed himself to the ground, and said, “My Lord, if I have now found favor in Your sight, do not pass on by Your servant. Please let a little water be brought, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree. And I will bring a morsel of bread, that you may refresh your hearts. After that you may pass by, inasmuch as you have come to your servant.” They said, “Do as you have said.”

I looked for Jewish scholarship that supports my thesis about the relationship between sexual deviance and how we treat others. I found a few:

Talmud, Sanhedrin 57a: This text connects the generation of the Flood’s sexual corruption to the destruction of the world. The rabbis interpret the biblical phrase “all flesh had corrupted its way” (Genesis 6:12) to include illicit sexual behavior. Rashi (Rabbi Shlomo Yitzchaki), a major medieval commentator, explains that this refers to widespread sexual perversion that transgressed boundaries of family and even species.

Midrash Genesis Rabbah: The midrash goes further, describing a state of complete moral chaos in which even animals and the land itself were corrupted. This moral decay, including the sexual corruption, stemmed from a deeper selfishness.
The Sin of Ḥamas (Violence): While the Bible specifies that the earth was filled with ḥamas (violence), rabbinic tradition interprets this broadly to encompass more than physical assault. Some midrashim interpret ḥamas to include sexual violence, or they see it as the overarching characteristic of a selfish society where the strong abuse the weak.

Maimonides (Rambam): The great medieval philosopher discusses the purpose of sexual laws in the Torah. He emphasizes that the laws are for the benefit of humanity, promoting human dignity and preventing the moral and social decay that results from a purely physical, selfish approach to sex.

As I understand the video, the author has taken a mixture of Scripture, and archeological evidence and reliable narratives and combined them into a single narrative to tell the story.

With each point he makes, you’d have to search that point to find out the source of where he might have drawn it from.

For example, the thick ash he talks about is archeological evidence of the sites that are thought to be Sodom and Gommorah. Same with the walls, because that is what they found at the sites thought to be those cities.

It would appear that the main source for this narrative of Sodom and Gomorrah is the Book of Jasher.
