Actress Dame Patricia Routledge, known for playing Hyacinth Bucket in classic TV sitcom Keeping Up Appearances, has died at the age of 96.
She also starred in Alan Bennett's TV monologues and played BBC One's amateur sleuth Hetty Wainthropp, while also enjoying an acclaimed stage career.
Her agent told the PA news agency on Friday that she died "peacefully in her sleep this morning surrounded by love".

RIP, Dame Routledge! Thank you for all the laughter and joy you brought to people around the world.
Hyacinth Bucket (“It’s BOUQUET!”) was one of the most hysterical characters in television history. Hyacinth could be insufferable but, deep down, loved her family (except possibly Onslow, lol).
Hyacinth was a horrible singer, but Dame Routledge possessed a beautiful singing voice.
I think I will watch “Keeping Up Appearances” on BritBox tonight.
Mid 1990s— my wife and I attended a television/movie themed fancy dress party. We were in our twenties and a bit youthful for the characters but we were smashing as Onslow and Hyacinth on that evening!
“Mind the bicycle Richard”
Oh, that’s not possible, because there’s a YouTube video that’s been out for quite a while that says she killed herself years ago. At least that’s what the picture of the video portrays. (They wouldn’t lie for clicks, would they?)
How I laughed at her and the series over the years!!!
On behalf of Onslow wanna-be’s every were, RIP Dame Patricia.
here she is from earlier this year to commemorate VE Day: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XtSFFyGmUY0
“Mind the old lady on the pavement. Sound the horn dear so she knows you’re coming.”
Did you watch Bewitched? Mrs Kravitz was a major Karen.
Thanks.
According to her, Bucket was pronounced "Bouquet" but nobody got it right.
Best physical comedienne/actress since Lucy.
Her physical comedy was so darn hilarious.
Nobody ever mentions that. I felt it had to be mentioned.
Yes, her “clowning” abilities were also one of her strong suits.
I love the expression she makes when she gets her neighbor across the street to come to the window by calling her on the phone - and the expression of delight and triumph as she sets the phone down in that episode where she is having new furniture delivered because she wants the neighbor to see the delivery van of the store it was ordered from.
“Oh??! Bucket!”
ROFLMAO! Perfect. Thanks for that.
You’re welcome.
I can’t add to the tributes already posted here. RIP.
