DENVER (KDVR) — The University of Colorado Boulder was fined by the Big 12 Division on Tuesday after reports surfaced of inappropriate chants by CU students during the football game against BYU at Folsom Field on Saturday.

CU faces a public reprimand and $50,000 fine.

The Big 12 issued a statement on Tuesday:

“In accordance with the Big 12 Conference Principles and Standards of Sportsmanship, the Conference has issued the University of Colorado a public reprimand and $50,000 fine for the inappropriate chants that occurred during Saturday’s football game against BYU.”

Alongside the announcement of the fine, the Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark made a statement:

“Hateful and discriminatory language has no home in the Big 12 Conference. While we appreciate Colorado apologizing for the chants that occurred in the stands during Saturday’s game, the Big 12 maintains zero tolerance for such behavior. Colorado will receive a $50,000 fine in accordance with our Conference policies,” said Yormark.

CU’s Athletic Director Rich George responded to the fine in a press release on Tuesday:

“CU Athletics was notified by the Big 12 Conference of its decision to issue a fine to the University of Colorado for the actions of some CU fans at last Saturday’s game. We respect the conference’s decision, and we take responsibility for the behavior exhibited at the game. On behalf of our athletic department and the university, I want to apologize to BYU and the entire Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints community. Chancellor Schwartz and I also apologized personally to our counterparts at BYU on Saturday night and again on Sunday.

The behavior by those fans who chanted was appalling, is unacceptable, and is not indicative of the values we strive for at CU. We must do better and we will. In collaboration with our campus stakeholders, we are currently reviewing our policies with respect to fan behavior to ensure that Folsom Field is a welcoming place for every fan and that those who do not live up to our standards are held accountable. When we implement those changes, we will communicate them publicly. Any patron who is found to have violated our Fan Code of Conduct, including engaging in derogatory chants, will face a series of consequences up to and including a ban from future home games.”

The fine comes after several officials and representatives of CU condemned the chants. CU Athletic Director Rick George and Chancellor Justin Schwartz stated on Monday:

“The University of Colorado Boulder strongly condemns the use of expletives and religious slurs by individuals in the stands during the recent football game against BYU. Such behavior is deeply disappointing and does not reflect the values of respect, inclusion and integrity we expect of our campus community. Attending sporting events at CU Boulder is a privilege, and with that comes the responsibility to uphold our Fan Code of Conduct. The university and CU Athletics have a strict policy when it comes to abusive behavior, and those found to have engaged in conduct that is not consistent with our values are held accountable. CU Boulder is committed to fostering an environment where all individuals—students, staff, faculty, alumni, opposing fans and other visitors—feel welcome and safe. Discriminatory language and hostile conduct have no place at our athletic events or anywhere on our campus. We thank the majority of our fans who continue to support our teams with enthusiasm and respect. Together, we can ensure that CU Boulder events remain a source of pride and unity for our community and that visitors to our campus have a positive experience.”

Another person who would have heard the chants from his position on the field, Deion Sanders, apologized for the chants during his press conference on Tuesday.

“On behalf of CU, on behalf of our athletic department, we would like to apologize to our opponents from a week ago for whatever derogatory statements were made by our fans. That’s not indicative of who we are, our student body, our kids are phenomenal. So don’t indict us, just based on a group of young kids that probably was intoxicated and high simultaneously,” said Sanders at the press conference.

Yes it is, in Colorado. That's why everyone chanted "F the mormons."

Well, I remember my Alma Mater GA Southern playing a historically black college, and the racist crap I heard from the stands made me sick to my stomach.

Another time, we played a team from Idaho, and the idiots in the stands were throwing potatoes at the players.

But that college was in the north, where potatoes are not grown

Just a commentary on how stupid football fans can be.

Western Colorado has a lot of Mormons. Western Colorado has a lot of conservatives, too. Don’t lump that part of the state in with the cess pool strip city that runs along the Front Range.

And just how is the university supposed to control a crowd that large?

I've never lived in Colorado, but I have visited several times. Overall, the state is a head case, like California. If I want to live in mountains and beautiful scenery, I'll move to Wyoming or Montana.

Yes. CO has been Californicated. The MI shooting was anti Mormon as well. The left is at war with Christianity in all of its forms.
