DENVER — The Big 12 Conference on Tuesday slapped the University of Colorado Boulder with a $50,000 fine and a “public reprimand” after several Colorado students were heard chanting religious slurs during Saturday’s football game against BYU.
CU Boulder students who were at the game over the weekend told Denver7 that several of their peers chanted the phrase "F—k the Mormons" along with other hateful statements during the Sept. 27 game against the BYU Cougars.
A day later, CU’s chancellor and the university’s athletic director released a joint statement condemning the chant, calling the behavior “deeply disappointing.”
But on Tuesday, Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark said that while he appreciated the apology from CU Boulder officials, the Conference “maintains zero tolerance for such behavior.”
“Hateful and discriminatory language has no home in the Big 12 Conference,” Yormark said in a short statement.
A Univ
ersity of California, Berkeley report shows incidents of hate speech — especially online — are increasing across the United States.
“The future implications, I think, are real... is this really what we want civil discourse to look like in our country? Does this feel good? And I don't think it feels good to people, and I hope that it's a call, a shout out to people, to reach out to members of the LDS church,” Susan Rona, the regional director of the Anti-Defamation League Mountain States, told Denver7 Monday.
During a news conference later Tuesday, Coach Prime addressed the inappropriate conduct in front of reporters by once again apologizing to BYU.
The derogatory slurs hurled toward the Cougars on Saturday are "not indicative of who we are, our student body. Our kids are phenomenal, so don't indict us just based on a group of young kids that probably was intoxicated and high simultaneously," the Buffs coach said. "BYU, we love you. We appreciate you, and we support you."
CU Boulder officials said those found to have engaged in the conduct would be held accountable.
That is horrible! Why would they think thus was okay?
I don’t know where all this anti-LDS is coming from.
Legalize marijuana they said. It’ll be fun they said.
Even Coach Prime said they were probably drunk and high.
” Why would they think thus was okay?”
Smart-ass, juvenile, disrespectful, anti-religious college idiots. BYU and the LDS folks don’t make a big stink about it, but this sort of thing happens to them quite a bit. Whenever Stanford and BYU play, for example, Stanford’s smart-alecky band takes a lot of cheap, mocking shots at Mormons. They do the same thing to Catholics when Stanford plays Notre Dame. This sort of attack on a religion is not only offensive to the opponent school, it’s also particularly insulting to members of those religions who are Stanford students/faculty/staff.
The band plays Osmonds songs?
If you don’t follow golf, you probably don’t know that a huge stink was raised by fan chants using the F-word against European players, in particular Rory McIlroy, at the recent Ryder Cup matches in Bethpage on Long Island NY.
This has set off a discussion about where rowdy fans cross the line and what can be done about it. So I would imagine this latest incident is perhaps partly a poorly thought out ironic copycat effort, possibly some taking part thought it was humorous. The golf event was fabulous golf surrounded by the worst fan behavior seen in many years, especially in golf where the players are a lot closer to the spectators than football or hockey players might be (and a lot less used to hearing profane insults). Not only was the F-word being freely tossed around, various insults were being hurled at the players, and sometimes when they were engaged in making shots. As anyone who has played golf will know, banter is one thing but making any sort of noise during a shot is liable to put a player off.
Anyway that’s the back story, I would imagine these college football fans had seen the Ryder Cup coverage on TV.
If only it were that innocent. No, the Stanford Band does things like mocking the LDS “Sealing Ceremony” by having it performed by two lesbians.
They were insulting mcilroys wife, even. Long islanders. Drinking. Why are they selling booze at this event? Go watch the golf and behave. What are you getting out of it if you’re wasted. But they were loud and ugly.
That doesn’t make Milroy look bad. It makes the fans look like a bunch of Long Island drunks
It’s Boulder, the anus of the state. It’s filled with the kind of people who believe anything they do is okay.
Liberty University gets picked on by the demons.
High class coloradans. Part of their DEI training. All 3 parts as a matter of fact.
Don’t blame alcohol and drugs for what comes from within. They are but keys to the gates.
Byu fans are the worse at their chants and insults to opposing teams...truth.
The same place where constant anti Catholic rhetoric comes from, but allowed and tolerated.
Damn. The Party of Assassins, Death and Destruction is going after anyone who is not one of them. Crazy bass turds. They are the greatest threat to their own “democrazy”.
Apparently yelling about fornication to a group that was founded with polygamy is a bad thing.
$50k not enough
LSU fans are looking at those CU fans and thinking, “pfft, amateurs.” They are the masters of the obscene chant. Every LSU fan knows what “STTDB” means. And they love to drop it every chance they get.
