How to stay safe if you meet a wild boar while walking or driving

Wild boars are becoming an increasingly common sight in urban areas across Spain. Towns such as Denia, Javea, Calpe, Pego, El Verger and Els Poblets are among the most affected, with these wild animals no longer sticking to forests. Streets, beaches and even homes are now on their route, leaving locals feeling uneasy. With tourism down, the boars’ presence is even more noticeable.

This isn’t a new problem. The surge in wild boar numbers is linked to a mix of ecological, social and urban factors.

To tackle the issue, the Generalitat Valenciana has introduced a decree with guidelines on population control and wildlife management, alongside financial support for local councils to

What to do if you encounter a wild boar

Keep your distance – don’t touch or corner them.

Warning signs of a possible attack: hair standing on end along the back and a cracking sound like nuts being bitten.

Never feed them.

If driving, stay calm: keep your eyes open, avoid honking, and don’t flash your lights.

Keep campsites and trails clean, as food scraps attract them.

Authorities’ role

The Police and Guardia Civil are responsible for managing the situation, usually by guiding the animals back to their natural habitats. Each municipality has its own protocols depending on the severity of the problem.

Why wild boars are booming

No natural predators: The disappearance of foxes, genets and eagles has helped them multiply.

High reproductive rate: A female can have up to eight piglets per litter.

Milder winters: Climate change means more adults and young survive.

Damage to crops: They ruin fields, orchards and irrigation systems, causing economic losses.

Urban incursions: Their lack of fear of humans brings them into gardens, terraces and streets.

Population control measures include capture cages and studies into sterilisation. Experts agree that long-term solutions require an integrated approach combining population management, public education and urban planning.

If you regularly eat bacon - they’ll know.

I wonder what wild boar bacon is like. I've had wild boar meat (Wildschwein) in Germany, and it was delicious.

Unless I missed it in the article, it never told you what to do when attacked by a boar, and it didn’t give the slightest hint of any real plan to control their population.

Good to know you shouldn’t flash your car lights at it.

Keep your distance.
Did not know that. Explains why I keep getting arrested.

Nope. Just kill them.

I’ve noticed that iOS 26 has been wreaking havoc with text entry on FreeRepublic. I’ve also had several cases of my own posts being posted multiple times since iOS 26 came out. Processing the “Post” command has been extremely slow, which I think causes multiple posts as the poster clicks again thinking it didn’t work.

And trying to type on FR in landscape mode, at least on a phone, is now impossible because iOS 26 covers almost the entire screen with the keyboard and toolbars.

Never met a wild boar. I’ve met a few crashing bores though.

I encounter them all the time on my place. They are afraid of people because we shoot them on sight. So, they run. But, if it is a boar with sows and piglets in the group, they won’t run.

Machete or katana would be handy. Spain is highly restrictive on guns.

You can try the “hide toolbar” option. iOS 26 works fine for me on my iPhone 15 max. No real difference than before the upgrade.

Note that this may not work in Spain without a rifle attached to your iPhone.

I had used that before sometimes, but hadn’t used it since iOS 26 came out because it was so hard to find on the now cramped screen. I just now poked around and finally found it (it’s much more buried than it was in iOS 18). That definitely helps, but iOS 26 still places an up/down arrow and checkmark toolbar (I really hate these checkmarks that replaced “Done”) over the middle of the text entry window.

Audio version would lead people to avoid The View panelists or Rachel Maddow to keep their distance from bores. 💤💤
