I heard a professor talk about brother-sister marriages in ancient Egypt. Apparently the bad genetic effects get eliminated after a while because the children born with those defects don't survive.

Margaret Mead asked some "primitive" society she was studying whether they permitted brother-sister marriages. They looked at her as if she was crazy. If a man married his sister he wouldn't acquire any brothers-in-law.

I think it is the Egyptian King Tut who shows the apparent and disgusting results of inbreeding
