There would have been no abolition movement without the Bible. Period. Whether here or in the UK.
But the problem is enough hypocritical, misguided ‘Christians’ existed in the south etc…

Better treat them right, don't you think? That was the kicker. Slavery as a matter of private property was the guts of the Biblical social welfare system. What we have done without it is to socialize the poor. Didn't work, did it? When slavery became an income for its administrators because of the value of indentured constituency in a democratic system, it has become so expensive we could all end up in bonded servitude. How to resolve that paradox with humanity in the resentful culture it has produced is our challenge today.
Christ understood that original specification, speaking from that perspective in Matthew 25.
