A newborn girl, dubbed the “Miracle Angel” by her rescuers, was pulled crying from a pile of trash in a North Austin dumpster Saturday afternoon.
Her survival is a testament to the unyielding will to live that pro-life advocates say underscores the humanity of every baby — and the moral imperative to choose protection over peril.
The infant, her umbilical cord still attached, signaling a birth mere hours earlier, was discovered around 1:37 p.m. in the 8600 block of North Lamar Boulevard, according to the Austin Police Department.
Neighbors, alerted by her faint but fierce cries echoing some 40 to 50 feet away, summoned help that arrived just in time to affirm what rescuers called a divine intervention.
Perry Lewis, one of the neighbors who sprang into action, dove headfirst into the dumpster upon hearing the desperate sounds.
“She saved herself. She saved herself, you know what I mean? She cried. She has a God-given voice. She cried up out of that dumpster. About 40, 50 feet away, man, my neighbor heard her,” Lewis recounted, his words capturing the raw miracle of the moment.
Assisted by Lerrssy Frausto, Lewis extracted the baby from the refuse and worked to keep her conscious while first responders raced to the scene.
Frausto, noting the fresh evidence of birth, observed, “She was definitely born today. You could tell—umbilical cord was still there.”
Paramedics from Austin-Travis County EMS transported the conscious and alert newborn to Dell Children’s Medical Center, where she was evaluated and found to be in good health with no immediate health issues. The child has since been placed in the custody of Child Protective Services, her tiny frame now shielded from the abandonment that could have claimed her life.
No suspects are in custody as detectives from the APD Child Abuse Unit probe the heartbreaking circumstances that led to the disposal of such a vulnerable life. Authorities are urging anyone with information on the responsible party to come forward by calling 512-974-6880.
In the wake of the rescue, voices from the scene and law enforcement alike echoed a pro-life clarion call: Texas’ Safe Haven Law stands ready as a lifeline for parents in crisis.
“Just to remind people, there’s an option out there, it’s called the Safe Haven Law, where you can drop off a newborn infant at any fire station, EMS station, or police station. No questions asked,” APD Officer Aaron Townsend emphasized, highlighting a pathway that could have spared the infant unimaginable suffering.
The rescuers, moved by the baby’s resilience, expressed a fierce determination to remain part of her story.
“I just thank God we were here for her. She’s a beautiful baby, and she’s not unwanted. We’re definitely going to stay in contact and do whatever we can to be in her life,” Lewis said.
Deep blue austin.
Thank G-d that baby cried!
Thankfully the precious little child survived.
Incomprehensible....to throw your baby away with the trash.
What hell the mother must live in.
That baby girl is lucky, whoever cares for her will make sure she never finds out the circumstances of her birth, at least not until she’s nearly grown. There is no way to explain to a kid why your Mom would do such a thing. Let her grow up without that enormous sign of rejection staring her in the face. Maybe she won’t ever have to know.
This happened in extreme-WOKE Austin.
I’ve seen pictures . She is a big, perfect, beautiful baby girl. God bless her.
The mother could have gone to any police or fire station and handed over the baby with no ramifications.
The intent was to kill the baby. The child’s DNA will be entered into a data base. If either father or mother have ever given DNA for any reason, the patents will be found. The mother for sure should be arrested for attempted murder.
They can track the parents down even if their DNA is not available using genetic genealogy.
D*mn. God bless the child.....
Don’t know the circumstances, but somebody in the childs paternal and maternal line is very confused. Could be a drug user baby...and rape baby, an incest baby...or a dumb mama baby ..I hope she has a good life...
