I still believe there is enough hot air coming out of DC to melt the polar ice caps on Mars

Of the 12 months of the year, each with its own average monthly sea ice extents record, not one sea ice extents record has changed statistically up or down since 1010. In fact, the general trend for 10 of the 12 months has been up very slightly since 2015.

Contemporary science itself has become thoroughly corrupted, and not just reporting about it.

Almost no one bothers to note that many of these "never before recorded" weather events take place because accurate records only go back to he 70s or 80s, a blink of an eye when addressing geophysical changes.

We are still experiencing the catastrophic consequences of WWI, which led to the devaluation of all liberal, democratic values, including a sober scientific examination of the facts. Instead, that was replaced by various totalizing, inebriate fantasies about the perfectibility of man via fascism, communism, or the administrative state.

We used to snicker at the Soviet "science" of Lysenkoism or dialectical materialism, but have come up with our own fantasy of "anthropogenic global warming" to justify totalitarian control of contemporary societies by our corrupt political and managerial classes.

As both Nietzsche and Dostoyevsky predicted, the desire to destroy existing societies totally to build something supposedly better (nihilism) would become the bane of our times.

The claim about arctic sea ice is just one little droplet in the tsunami of nihilistic BS.

Ah, the left. Science is not their friend. Never was. Never will be.

But blind faith in whatever they are told is science is integral to their religion.

The U.S. Coast Guard has a critical shortage of icebreakers. The only ones with the hulls to get to the North pole are all old and decrepit. The Russians have massive nuclear powered ones that can get to the pole in winter if they wanted too.

As NSIDC itself admits, the flattening trend is still a subject of “active debate” among scientists.

Perhaps it’s time for policymakers and journalists to debate it as well — instead of pretending the science is “settled.”

I object: They aren't pretending. They believe it as if it was - ahem - the Word of God to the Pope. All the money they've wasted and the higher inflation/bills are not 'imaginary'.

But I appreciate Watts greatly, despite the faux pas.

Re: "Plus-Minus ice estimates"

That is a good question. 1.78 million square miles is plus-minus at least 10,000 square miles.

Also, for square miles, you cannot just add up all the pixels with ice, because the Earth is a sphere.

As far as ice thickness, maybe the wave length of reflected light is different for variable thickness?

One thing for certain - measuring instruments ALWAYS get better with time.

There is a contest in Alaska where people bet on the exact date and time the ice on the Tanana River at Nenana will break up (in spring). The event has been organized since 1917 so we have a long, consistent and TRUSTWORTHY record, contrary to satellite data.

The hotter the year, the earlier the ice break up. So the Nenana Ice Classic must surely be the most known and celebrated event by globull warmists to show to us peons that the icecap is melting, right? Right? We all know the answer.

“We used to snicker at the Soviet “science” of Lysenkoism or dialectical materialism, but have come up with our own fantasy of “anthropogenic global warming” to justify totalitarian control of contemporary societies by our corrupt political and managerial classes.”

Good post.

Ancient ruling classes all over the world claimed their right to rule came from their deities.

Today they claim it comes from the newest deity in the pantheon—(fake) science.

In the future humans will be laughing at how stupid we were.

Meanwhile they will probably be kneeling to a different (fake) deity or deities.

AI may be its name.
