‘Afraid of our talent,’ says Piyush Goyal after US H-1B visa fee hike, urges Indians to return, innovate in India

India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal reacted to the H-1B visa fee being hiked to $100,000 by US President Donald Trump, saying that the world is “a little afraid of Indian talent” and exhorted Indians working abroad to “come to India, innovate here, design here”. Goyal, who will be leading the Indian delegation in the US for the next round of talks for a trade deal amid tensions over tariffs, made remarks apparently reacting to the $100,000 fee on H-1B visas used mostly by high-skilled Indian workers in the US.

The minister also said that “different countries across the world also want to do Free Trade Agreements with India”.

“They want to increase trade with India. They want to improve relations,” he said, in a video clip from a speech that he shared on his X handle.

After a pause and smile, Goyal added, “They are also a little afraid of our talent. We have no objection to that either.”

The commerce minister then urged the Indian talent to “come to India, innovate here, design here”. He said that will make the economy grow even more rapidly and added, “So we are winners, come what may.”

He also spoke about being “on a mission mode” to make it easier for businesses in India, promoting manufacturing, and supporting international trade.

The H1B guys should invent deodorant for themselves if they are as smart as their overlords say.

“The fee should be so high that it compels them to find American talent first.”

I’m in favor of poaching high-quality people.

If you aren’t a world class tech person, teach.

High-quality people will be worth the $100K fee. If they’re not worth paying the fee, they’re not high-quality.

You make a good point. If theoretically the program is intended to bring in experts, you would expect them to be of a mature age. We know already that companies have to train younger H1Bs on the job. In my view H1B should be restricted to senior level experts who are here just long enough to train their American replacements. Let’s say, limited to 3 to 5 years.

I’ve worked overseas a few times. Our contracts typically allowed us to bring in a few experts and department heads with the work to be performed by locals. That way over time the locals gained the expertise.

If India had put more money into developing export infrastructure as China has rather than exporting their people, they might have become the world’s factory of choice like China has.

The purpose of a 100K fee is to restrict the inflow of foreign workers and give more jobs to the Americans. Needs to be increased to 500K, why the hell not? Your kindergarten “math” is meaningless.

“$100,000 fee on H-1B visas used mostly by high-skilled Indian workers in the US”

I suspect the Indian government could unilaterally overcome the problem for $100 million to $2 billion.

He is asking the wrong question. We’re not afraid of their talent. The big question is why talented people are desperate to get out of India.

The fact that a government official can’t perceive the real question indicates that he is part of the problem.

Send the Indian H-1B’s back to India. If they are so talented, why is India such a dump?
