Thousands of people were evacuated from their homes in Hong Kong overnight so experts could defuse a large US-made bomb left over from World War II that was discovered at a construction site.
Police said the bomb was nearly 5 feet in length and weighed about 1,000 pounds.
It was discovered by construction workers in Quarry Bay, a bustling residential and business district on the west side of Hong Kong island.
“We have confirmed this object to be a bomb dating back to World War II,” said Andy Chan Tin-Chu, a police official, speaking to reporters ahead of the operation. He said that because of “the exceptionally high risks associated with its disposal,” approximately 1,900 households involving 6,000 individuals were “urged to evacuate swiftly.”
The operation to deactivate the bomb began late Friday and lasted until around 11:30 a.m. Saturday. No one was injured in the operation.
Bombs left over from World War II are discovered from time to time in Hong Kong.
The city was occupied by Japanese forces during the war, when it became a base for the Japanese military and shipping.
The United States, along with other Allied forces, targeted Hong Kong in air raids to disrupt Japanese supply lines and infrastructure.

LOL 😂
now that is really something. 😳
The guy in the back appears to be popping a bag to scare the other guy-not funny or is it?
If the bomb goes off those protective suits won’t help much.
"Why, that could be a thousand pound bomb!"
Despite the Korean War which resulted in over 2 million Chinese casualties, the cold war, and the current animosities, the Chinese people had and continue to have an affection and a sense of gratitude for the American effort and sacrifices that defeated Japan. Also after WW II, HoChi Minh and the independence leaders of Vietnam warmly welcomed the American military that entered Vietnam after Japan’s surrender and apparantly had great respect and admiration for the US Constitution and the Declaration of Independence’
Funny how things eventually turned out.
Look closely I see some letters. A C _ E
I brought this to the attention of our Headquarters Battery commander and after we cleared some sand away from it, he said "it's only a blue bomb (a training bomb) - don't worry about it".
I cleared a little more sand and I exposed the side fuze and the olive green paint of a live 2,000 pound Mk 84 bomb and once the battalion commander saw this, we evacuated the whole battery to about a mile away and EOD detonated the thing in place. You could easily hide a HUMMWV in that crater!
If it were in Tennessee, some metal detectorist would find it, dig it up, take it home, and display it on the hearth in front of his fireplace.
It’s probably a bit too large for one of the kids to take it to school for show and tell.
In Hong Kong, they’ll probably handle it a bit differently.
It’s a comic that’s been around for many years, it’s a fake pic too.

It was his direction that caused our captured aircrews to be subjected to torture and deprivation while they were captives of the North. As soon as he was dead, the torture stopped.
Quit pushing that communist propaganda!
Looks like a photoshop variation of a Far Side cartoon from the 80s.
Nothing to worry about—obviously, it’s a dud.
Wi Goh Boom !
No real argument about your facts. My only point was that the politics in Asia from 1945-48 was complicated. No denying that HoChiMinh turned out to be a cruel, murderous man not just against our POWs but against anyone who opposed him. Yet it is a legitimate question to ask if the US, fearful at the time of an agressive Stalin and trying to form an alliance to oppose him, made a stategic error when it supported France’s efforts to hold its IndoChina colonies. Would the most radical communists have come to power in Vietnam if France had granted them independence.
Astonishing! Just an old bomb, laying around. Crazy!
