More proof universities shouldn’t be running police departments. Hiring and supervising police is a government function which should be controlled be elected officials, not unelected bureaucrats. What happens in these situations is that the police start using criminal law, and arrest power to enforce administrative rules and regulations. It’s predictable. Of course, Penn State, Ohio State, Michigan State and other universities have all had problems with police covering up crimes by university staff. It’s time to end this nonsense. Universities only need security guards who can be deputized when needed to deal with unrest. The campus rent-a-cop system needs to go along with the other bad things that came from the Vietnam War.

I feel the same way about government school systems. They like running their own PDs. If they need LEOs on site, they should be allowed only if under the command of the Constitutionally elected county sheriff. There are too many cases of school system run PDs sweeping crimes under the rug because the crimes reflect poorly on the school system.
If you need LEOs on site, have them through the sheriff’s office as an additional check and balance.
