Fascinating article. I hadn’t heard of this session. I do remember Mingus, to my mind a malcontent, a contrarian, a lone wolf, speaking of his tremendous admiration for Ellington in “Beneath the Underdog.”
I had the pleasure of seeing Mingus once in person, Quiet Knight in Evanston, IL and had a drink with him at the bar. His pianist was Don Pullen who did one of the finest solos I have ever heard.
Totally unsurprising that Duke could absorb any genre.

Wow.
Duke Ellington and his Cotton Club Orchestra made the most sophisticated music ever played in the world (some of it over 100 years old now.) IMHO
This is a masterpiece album by three masters of their individual instruments. You need to make sure to get the expaneded version as well.
