A 12-year-old boy and a 20-year-old man have been charged with second-degree murder in connection with a series of violent robberies of homeless or vulnerable people in downtown Toronto last month.
“This was a disturbing crime spree,” Toronto Police Det. Stacey McCabe, of the Homicide and Missing Persons Unit, told a press conference Monday.
“It’s concerning that these young people would be targeting such vulnerable members of our city.”
The Aug. 31 spree involved five incidents including one at 6:08 a.m. that police say turned fatal. A 62-year-old man was sleeping on a bench in the Queen and Bay Streets area when he was violently attacked by two males — one armed with a hammer.
Police say the victim went to a hospital and was released, but was later found on Sept. 4 outside without vital signs. Despite life-saving measures, he died at the scene. Police did not say where he was found.
As the victim’s next-of-kin have not yet been located, the identity of the man — the city’s 29th homicide of the year — was not released.(snip)
Isaiah Byers, 20, of Toronto, is charged with second-degree murder, three counts of robbery, two counts of assault with a weapon, and one count of aggravated assault.
The 12-year-old boy is charged with second-degree murder, four counts of robbery, two counts of assault with a weapon, and one count of aggravated assault.
