I forget the word processor, before “Word”, for PCs.
There were several that were #1: Wordstar, Multimate, and finally WordPerfect (the greatest mainstream word processor of all time, with XYwrite and Nota Bene as excellent niche products).
The DOS version of WordPerfect was written in assembler, so it was lightning fast on the PCs at the time. DOS Word and IBM's DisplayWrite were players, but definitely second tier. With DisplayWrite being almost unbearable.

DisplayWrite III was pretty bad. I remember hacking Word so that we could use extra fonts with a special loader program I wrote.
With an IBM PC I was the odd one out among my friends, who all had Commodore 64’s. Speaking of which, Commodore was just bought by a bunch of fans and is re-releasing the C=64. They’re apparently planning a series of new products.
