A Left-wing Muslim MP who has repeatedly challenged Sir Keir Starmer over Gaza is a contender to become his new deputy after Angela Rayner resigned over the Telegraph’s investigation into her tax affairs.
Rosena Allin-Khan, who rebelled against Sir Keir’s welfare reforms earlier this year, has emerged as the potential standard bearer for the Left in a deputy leadership election that is being described as a referendum on the Prime Minister’s leadership.
Labour’s deputy leaders are directly elected by party members, meaning the deep divides within Labour will be exposed to full public view as the Left tries to impose its will on Sir Keir.
Labour’s party conference later this month, which was meant to launch a so-called “Phase Two” of Sir Keir’s premiership, will instead become little more than a hustings event for those vying to be his deputy.
Momentum, the Left-wing campaign group that got Jeremy Corbyn elected as Labour leader, has already warned Sir Keir that the election of Ms Rayner’s replacement is “an opportunity for a well overdue debate about the change of direction the country and Labour so desperately need”.
