Can anyone please explain to me how this whole misnamed “refugee” thing started? Why was the west forced to take in everybody? It makes no sense.
Just still more of the left constantly re-righting all the dictionaries and moving the goal posts.
During WWII, the Jews who managed to escape Hitler, were often returned back to Germany, to sure death!
So were Hitler opponents from Germany and occupied countries.
After WWII, many Soviet Block citizens were also returned back, mostly to certain death, or gulags if there were lucky!
So free countries decided, that if somebody from those countries manage to escape, they should be given asylum and not return to death or gulag!
As a matter of fact, this international law is very restrictive, with lots of conditions attached.
The law, as it was adopted after WWII still stands, but it was over the years, this, basically good, humane law, was badly diluted by lawyers and politicians, so now, you just need to say “asylum” and you would be given asylum, with all kind of benefits, even if you just claim that there is violence in your country or whatever.
Slow, slippery slope!
Since the letter of the law did not changed, what Trump is doing is actually 100% in agreement with that international law says! He is just applying it, as it was written and implemented 70+ years ago, trying to undo the slippage.
“Why was the west forced to take in everybody? It makes no sense”
The law on refugees stems from Jews fleeing Nazi Germany. It was later expanded to be worldwide in 1967.
There was supposed to be a limitation that you had to claim asylum in the first safe country you could get to. The limitation is no longer enforced. Also, NGOs arrange to fly people in from Haiti and other far away countries.
Then there is welfare. The refugee convention simply requires equal treatment. Equal treatment would mean getting placed on a Section 8 (or UK equivalent) wait list, not put up in an expensive hotel.
Trump could simply hand the head of the UN a letter and the US would be out from under the refugee convention in a year.
It is in the UN charter, something about the right of the refugeee.
