The Doors defied Ed Sullivan, by keeping the word "higher" in the lyrics of "Light my Fire", unlike the Stones who gave in to Sullivan and his censors to change the lyrics of "Let's Spend the Night Together" to "Let's Spend Some Time together".

I know nostalgia, but it is history.

I'll give one thing to Ed Sullivan, all the bands had to perform live, not lip sync.

Flame away.

The single version of Light My Fire was such a huge hit that the radio stations playing it eventually played “the long version.” It was a critical step toward broadcasting album rock.

-

And wasn’t that the last time Sullivan had them on?

-

Side note, as I understand it, Morrison could be a proper jerk.

Also, I thought Val Kilmer did a terrific job portraying him.

That was the first and last appearance of The Doors on the Ed Sullivan show!

The Doors live on...

There is a wonderful documentary on Ed Sullivan called “Sunday Best: The Untold Story of Ed Sullivan” (not sure on which streaming service).

Ed Sullivan insisted on featuring black singers and groups that other shows wouldn’t have.

Great band. Saw then live twice: Madison Square Garden, again at the Felt forum. I’m giving my age away. Morrison croaked in 1971.

Not always. Gary Lewis' band mimed the instruments and Gary's voice was supplemented with prerecorded tracks for "This Diamond Ring".

The most underrated band of the 60s.

True innovators who captured the zeitgeist.

On a very solid R&B foundation.

I loved that they had to do everything live. Lip sync ruined everything. Morrison had a good voice but he was a total lop of a person, IMO. He would have never grown up.

Dead 3 years later at age 27. Really talented and also the son of an admiral from the Viet Nam years, presumably part of the Laurel Canyon/CIA, drug and destruction, pop entertainment, psyop that succeeded in starting the downward spiral of our culture.

Here he was a year later on the Smothers Brothers. You can see how professional his operation was with the brass section we know from their music:

(Also had a golden microphone long before Rush L.)

Sone of my favorite music. The soundtrack of my generation.

I enjoy the music. Have absolutely no interest in the personal lives of the musicians. Don’t even care to know their individual names. Doors or any other group.

Let the music stand alone.

Saw them in concert in Rochester, NY.

They were AMAZING! Morrison was fantastic. His presence and performance was EPIC!

“The Doors”, the movie, was EXCELLENT. (IS excellent)

Disclaimer: Doors, way before my time.
But I’ve heard the recordings. Impressive voice he had. Clearly he was drugged to the eyeballs in the video, not that I spotted eyeballs there at all...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RrDsSPtZOu4 — “Touch Me.” Somewhat better, still high.
Neither does him justice.
