As odd as it may sound, Jimmy Smith and The Sermon was one of the first steps on my road to becoming a church organist. I wanted to be a jazz organist, but my parents refused to let me go to the clubs or to Smith’s performances. I think they were afraid I would get caught up in the drug/booze scene, but I still listen to Smith when I want good non-church organ music.
I see George Coleman mentioned. Saw him in a tiny 2nd floor theatre on Bleecker Street in New York.
Rest of the family went to see "Cats." Not me.
