Why are gift cards a permitted purchase?
“ Why are gift cards a permitted purchase?”
Thats what I have wondered when seeing that huge selection of gift cards at the thrift store. It defies logic.
Cheating and scamming welfare part of the game.
There are a million ways to game and scam the system and the recipients know all of them
The rest of us are clueless to the fraud.
I thought I knew a bit about the scams but then I talked to a social worker who really knows the system and got a real education
The fraud is built into the system and everyone knows the score. Some of the schemes are diabolically clever but they only work because welfare recipients are willing to squander thousands of dollars in SNAP welfare money to launder it into a hundred dollars of drug money.
It’s the SNAP equivalent of destroying a million dollars air conditioning system to get a few hundred bucks for the aluminum and copper condenser coils
“”If other people are paying for it, yes, it should be inexpensive and nutritious foods only. I’d go right back to the government cheese, beans, rice, etc.
If you want to start a nonprofit to provide luxury, unhealthy food to poor, you should feel free to do that, however.””
I would caution you to be less “uncharitable”. Life has a way of evening things out and leveling the scales... and you may find yourself, at some point, having to rely on only “government cheese, beans, rice” some day.
And keep in mind that a lot of folks on SNAP are elderly, poverty-level “ex-taxpayers”. People that have paid into the system plenty their whole lives, but have fallen on hard times, through no fault of their own, including health issues. If those folks were only able to get “government cheese, beans and rice”... it would be a death sentence to their already compromised immune systems.
That said, I have no problem with the ‘soda/candy’ ban part. It’s the precedent of control that it sets for “government ghouls” that I take issue with.
“RFK Jr. is paving the way for MORE government control and grip over our short hairs”
I believe all life-saving drugs are only available by prescription.
I agree with much of what you've said.
That said, years ago a group of two year olds were give a large quantity of different foods to eat on their high chair tray to choose between and they choose an almost perfectly balanced selection. Our brains know we need different foods at different times - like your diet changes from summer to winter - from when you're sick - to when you're feeling well. The key is to teach kids and adults to listen to their bodies... and when our bodies crave sweets it's usually wanting something in fruit and probably NOT the sugar part of fruit.
I enjoyed your well thought out honest comment.
“It’s the precedent of control that it sets for “government ghouls” that I take issue with.”
Your family could be eating too much chicken according to the Supreme Court.
So what if I do? Cheese, beans and rice are among the foods I buy for myself.
We also have social security for the elderly who paid into the system. SNAP was never intended for that.

That’s not the point. Could you... or would you want to live on ‘only’ cheese, beans and rice if you had no money to buy any other food?
As for SSN, the cost of living increase yearly is a frigging joke. Especially after the Democrats come in and screw up the US economy every time. Every expense skyrockets and what’s left after paying the bills is just not enough to live on, forcing folks to have to make very hard choices. Especially if they’ve had health problems. Even with Medicare, you still have to pay deductibles and 20%.
Bottom line, and what I’m trying to convey here is... you may be nice and comfy and cushy in your financial situation right now....
but trust me... that could change. Drastically. Especially if/when the Democrats regain power and are out for blood. American voter/taxpayer blood. Think about it.
“it’s usually wanting something in fruit and probably NOT the sugar part of fruit.”
I pick up a package of peaches often in summer. If it smells peachy, in the cart it goes. If it doesn’t smell peachy, back in the bin it goes.
British sailors were clueless about scurvy for centuries until they were made into ‘Limeys’.
I smell a nectarine or two on my dining room table. At least one nectarine will meet its fate within an hour or two.
I’m not saying people on SNAP should only get 3 foods. I get it, you depend on SNAP and like purchasing luxury foods with it.
But I think it is wrong to tax other people, including the working poor, more to fund it. Third-party payment systems are almost always a disaster.

I disagree that it’s poisoning them. Reporting hyperbole in action. It’s not the healthiest of diets, but it isn’t poison.
“”They should limit what can be bought with such cards””
I always thought there was a limit. For years I saw people in the grocery checkout tearing tickets out of books. I guess the card replaced those. I don’t see that anymore and it must be because they are swiping cards at the checkout? Now you can’t tell so you don’t see if they’re buying junk with “taxpayer funds” or a debit/credit card. Maybe that was the purpose of changing? Save them the embarrassment?
Can I have a $37,000/year NYC public school education?
Sure, Jose!
Can I have a 60-cent peach?
No way, Jose.
“I think it is wrong to tax other people, including the working poor, more to fund it.”
‘Bleeding heart’ liberals pay taxes too.
However, even their willingness to shell out is limited.
A balance has to be struck. Desirable things may have to be given up in favor of necessities.
End food stamps altogether. people will adapt to budgeting, saving for a rainy day, and not letting themselves get messed up. I’m sure over 90% of food stamp recipients made bone headed decisions.
I too love him, or at least his stands.
As a poor Cancer fighter, with minimum resources, I get about $120 a month of EBT, plus around $80 from my insurance company...thank you taxpayers.... for food, and medical supplies. To waste that precious resource on candy, and soda is a sin against the taxpayers who are helping out.
With that said, I do purchase 60% Cacoa chocolate bars, it is definitely not candy. EBT is for ground beef, ground sausage, bread, bacon, eggs and milk. Cut up salad, cucumbers, tomatoes, radishes and onions. Beef and Chicken boullion, frozen chicken in bulk. Broccoli, lots of broccoli. Money is tight, and I pay out of pocket for food too.
With the above paragraph being true, I personally know people who get close to $600 a month in EBT. No, they don’t have 12 kids, and they eat like Kings of yore. Everything they make, as I have eaten with them, is greasy, heavy cream, many types of cheeses, fried, and likely $30-40 just for supper.
I survive on 2 meals of low carb food a day, eggs for breakfast, with sometimes 2 sausage links, and dinner of beef, chicken, or tuna based food, and either green salad, or broccoli. Not complaining, it starves cancer staying away from sugar and starch, but it is healthier.
I am considered thin at 180lbs, and the certain lady who cooks lavishly, is around 350.
“I haven’t eaten in two days” is a common refrain from the fattie of 5’ 2”, so she calls in Door Dash at 10 PM. THAT is a sin against the US taxpayer. ALL groceries are delivered, and I mean ALL. Disgustipatin’ as Popeye would say.
I would actually prefer that. Local charity can cover genuine cases.
