Not to mention that the cargo was “taconite” a partially processed iron ore that absorbs water. So if the water comin’ in is absorbed the ship gets heavier than it’s rating... can’t pump out the water...ship gets lower in water and storm and wave action can tear the hull apart...

I didn’t know that about taco nite. That would certainly explain why there was no alarm. They may not have known they were taking on water, because the taco nite was absorbing it all.
Absolutely. The song itself is particularly revered by those of us living by the Great Lakes. We see ships like that all the time, and it just really hits home. I don't know why that song feels so powerful, but it just does.
