Russia is on the verge of political turmoil as its economy teeters on the brink of collapse and its war in Ukraine stumbles, warns a leading nationalist figure. Russian nationalists have been among the staunchest supporters of the Kremlin's war in Ukraine.
Figures like Aleksandr Dugin have even argued that Ukraine's destruction is crucial for Russia's survival. In his 1997 book "The Geopolitical Future of Russia", he expressed his views bluntly, writing: "The existence of Ukraine within its current borders, and with its current status as a 'sovereign state,' is tantamount to delivering a monstrous blow to Russia's geopolitical security."
However, a notable Russian nationalist and journalist has started to criticize Putin and his war in Ukraine. Vladimir Alexandrovich Kucherenko - better known by his pseudonym Maxim Kalashnikov - is a renowned Russian author and nationalist "agitator."
He recently implored Putin to halt the war in Ukraine or risk depleting Russia's military forces. The political activist has now escalated his warnings, predicting economic and political disaster that could spark a new Russian revolution. In an op-ed for a Russian media outlet, he contends that the country's economy is at its "limit" and Putin's regime is running out of time.
"Of course, (Aleksandr) Dugin and (Vladimir) Medinsky can babble about being ready to fight for another 10 or 20 years, but that's pure nonsense. We don't have that much time," he stated.
"I also hear the delusional statements that soon we will start a war with Europe, that we'll begin a new nuclear arms race and spend 90 trillion rubles on arsenal modernization. There is no chance of that. Our economy has not yet collapsed completely, but it is already breaking apart."

Russia was initially confident that it could outlast the west. That is, that the soft, weak, democratic west would lose interest before the economy of the strong, censored, authoritarian Russia would collapse. Now, a growing number of Russians are not so sure.
