What a ride!
I remember reading that at the last appearance of Secretariat at the Canadian International a whole bunch of winning betting tickets were never cashed. They were kept as souvenirs.
One of the greatest thrills of my life was watching Ron and Secretariat win the triple crown. What a horse. There will never be another. Of course, he was “too big to win the Belmont Stakes”. Yeah. Okay. I’ll never forget that. Now I know what 31 lengths and going away looks like.
RIP Ron. I hope you’re able to see Secretariat again.
Thanks for posting. Condolences to family and friends of Ron Turcotte. RIP
I’ve heard that Secretariat was also the sire of a number of impressive horses after him.
Oh man. I am blurry seeing that picture.
Oh, no. He was amazed that he was the lone survivor of Secretariat’s winning posse, having been paralyzed for so long.
A good and honorable man in a sometimes dirty business.
May he rest in peace.
Ron got to ride the greatest race horse of all time. Secretariat was God’s perfect horse!
Greatest horse ever, and one of the greatest jockeys.
I literally could not believe the announcer describing his ever extending lead - it was just impossible - and a moment that has stayed with me thro all those years.
Rest In Peace, Ron.
Indescribable moments in history. RIP Ron...
Wonderful horse. Apparently his heart was estimated to weigh 22 lbs. Average heart size in a horse is 8-10 pounds. Sham, his main rival, had a heart about 14 lbs Phar Lap, the Australian horse had a 14 lb heart. Zenyatta has been thought of having a large heart. Racing historians call it “XFactor” cause it is associated with the X gene in males...the horses mother has to have the x gene to pass it on to the foal.
Leads to great stamina...”a tremendous engine”.
What an astounding horse!
Turcotte did a great job in riding one of the best race horses in history.
I wonder why they never do a sonogram which can probably give someone an idea of how large a horses heart is...
Ride that magnificent chestnut in heaven now pardner
