Indeed. A once in a lifetime horse and moment.

I remember reading that at the last appearance of Secretariat at the Canadian International a whole bunch of winning betting tickets were never cashed. They were kept as souvenirs.

One of the greatest thrills of my life was watching Ron and Secretariat win the triple crown. What a horse. There will never be another. Of course, he was “too big to win the Belmont Stakes”. Yeah. Okay. I’ll never forget that. Now I know what 31 lengths and going away looks like.

RIP Ron. I hope you’re able to see Secretariat again.

I’ve heard that Secretariat was also the sire of a number of impressive horses after him.

winning betting tickets were never cashed

The same reason Einstein couldn't balance his checkbook. If I had a two-dollar, pardon me, twoonie ticket, I would definitely keep it. I am sure it's worth a LOT more than that. BTW, in New York State racetrack tickets have to pay a minimum of $2.20 on a deuce. The two-dollar ticket paid $2.20 at the 1973 Belmont Stakes, and 5,617 tickets were never cashed. I don't know what the distribution of wagers was.

Oh, no. He was amazed that he was the lone survivor of Secretariat’s winning posse, having been paralyzed for so long.

A good and honorable man in a sometimes dirty business.

May he rest in peace.

My (late) wife & I were driving to the Gulf for a week of vacation and listening to the Belmont race on car radio.

I literally could not believe the announcer describing his ever extending lead - it was just impossible - and a moment that has stayed with me thro all those years.
